Gus Poyet has warned his side against over-complicating their game, ahead of the visit to Huddersfield Town on Saturday...
The Albion boss would like the essence to be on winning at the John Smith’s Stadium, by focusing on the basics he has implemented during the past three years. He told seagulls.co.uk, “We need to win football games and we are doing practically everything, but not quite enough. As a group we are quite crazy about looking for solutions and options but we have got to be careful not to complicate things, because football is very simple. We are the ones that complicate football.
“We try too hard to do things that are not possible. We have been nearly there recently, and it’s like hitting 99 pence, but not the one pound. That is something that we would like to change on Saturday and the reaction I’m looking for is to get the three points.
“If the opposition is better or we have a bad day, we have got to accept that and move on, but last Saturday was there for us to take and we didn’t. If that only happens once, then okay, but it can’t happen again. We need to play the game in the proper way.
“But Huddersfield have started well and they are a typical Simon Grayson team – they are difficult to play against. They have plenty of options up front with plenty of strikers. If we can control their strikers we have half of the game done.”
The Terriers’ attacking line is likely to be led by Jermaine Beckford, a player Poyet knows a lot about from his Leeds United days, and the Uruguayan still has the utmost respect for the striker.
“He is quality. He is a player who through his individual quality and ability went to the Premier League quite quickly, and practically jumped a division.
“He didn’t settle at Everton for whatever reason but he became a top earner and I’m pleased for him, because I know how much that means for him and his family. He worked very hard for that.
“Now he wants to play football and he is quite old fashioned with that. It’s not about the agents asking and looking for other clubs, it’s just about playing football for the club and that is the old way.
“Becks did what he needed to do to get to the higher salary situation and now he is desperate to play football, which is good for the game.
“At Leeds, he had to drop down to League One which was not nice for him, but when you play for a club like Leeds United with that kind of pressure, you learn a lot as a player. It was a very important part of his career.”
