He may well get a chance in cup games although the first round of the Carling Cup comes too soon as he came back from the world cup and had a break so has only just begn his pre-season.

Interesting that last year we were up in arms about playing a reserve side in cup games. Just thinking how we might feel about a "reserve" team like this representing the Albion in cup games this season.................

Brezovan
Vincelot Dunk/Cook Elphick/Hall Tanno
Buckley Navarro Caskey Smith/Noone
Bergkamp Agdestein

............. and before anyone says it, what Brez needs more than anything is game time so when the reserves play he should be picked ahead of Poke and even give him occasional games for the Development Sqad if that's what he needs to get to top form ahead of cup games where he is going to start. Sitting on the bench is not good for him - he is the sort who needs the confidence that only comes playing

If Jake is good enough, he will be in the squad! Gus is an artist at smoke & mirrors. :)

Agreed. If he does enough in training, he'll get picked.

What I'm worried about is that Gus is saying that, as he wants to cash in on the money for him sooner rather than later. Hopefully that's just paranoia on my part.

Its not just Caskey that will be affected, what about Kasim, Simmonds, Bergkamp et al. What is the point of developing youth when there is nowhere to go. The rule should have been made 5 subs and 2 extra who have to be under 21. That would encourage clubs to develop there youth a bit more

Far be it from me to criticise Gus - who knows what he's doing far better than I do - but it seems a bit harsh to rule out a player for the whole season now. The lad's still growing, still learning, still getting better - why shouldn't he be ready to break through at least later on in the season? - surely you can't rule that out now?

This is gus grabbing the headlines and more managers now coming out in support of his stance. It is ridiculous this decision was taken without consulting the lma or pfa and gus is right with only 5 subs that limits you to experienced players. Caskey will play in the cups imo but agree with gus this is a blow for fringe and young players

Think cup first round should be a few first teamers but mainly bench. Not ALL reserve lads though hopefully. We do actually want to get through first round this year don't we?

It is such a step backwards for the development of young players. If they want to cut costs either make it so 2 of the 7 must be u21 or manage your club finances better

a minimum number of u21s within match squad would be very sensible for English football

so it won't happen.
