elninobonito Las Vegas 10k sounds like fun - a bit hot and sticky though, in my experience of Vegas! I'm not sure where you could go for specialist advice in Crawley, but I know they have both a Decathlon and a Sports Direct. I would try on as many shoes as you can bear to and see how they feel - it was my experience at the start of my running interest that trying a few different types of shoe was crucial. You eventually find what you like and that's when its worth investing the cash money. I'm a big fan of Asics footwear, all my running shoes are Asics.

The LV 10k iirc is run in November, it isn’t that hot then, today highs of 13c as an example.

Anyone else been offered the dream that is Brighton Marathon membership?

Only £60 a year for three years for guaranteed entry, ability to transfer entry to family and get your race pack posted to you.

I think they've taken a leaf out of Mr Barber's book. I've passed.

Other (better) marathons are available [emoji16]

I initially read that as £60 for three years and it seemed a bargain. But £60 EVERY year? Forget that. I think I've got one or two more Brightons in me, because, as Dazzer says, there are LOADS of better marathons/events out there.

On another note, welcome to the new/returning runners to The Best Thread On NSC™ :bigwave:

Talking of Brighton Marathon - call me crazy, but I'm seriously considering the Duathlon option for next year. Get the bike ride done and then get over to Preston Park to start the marathon down on my usual starting position - but run the whole way flashing off my bike medal.

Same here. Apparently I've been "personally chosen" for this honour. Presumably someone has told them that I'm a gullible mug....

I fail to see what's crazy about that idea :moo:

What IS crazy is that you're not considering adding in a swim before the bike ride...

I need to be realistic about how early I'm able to get up in the morning.

I was actually at work at 09:08 yesterday, comfortable the earliest I've been at my desk since my bosses boss was over from America in June. Today, however, I've reverted to 10am being the ABSOLUTE earliest I can manage. I tried to get here for 9, but failed quite miserably.

I've had a sore right hip since my pre-rugby run last Saturday, which was my fastest 10 mile ever.

It seemed to have recovered today so I went out a short while ago to give it a seven mile test. Everything felt good and in just running along I set what is apparently my fastest 10km time to date at 48:01. I'm not entirely sure which 6.2 miles within the seven were the fastest though!

Given I had to cross the A27, the A259, get across a zillion other junctions and then weave in and out of what seemed like the whole world out for a Sunday afternoon stroll on Worthing seafront and I wasn't trying to go fast (for me), I'm quite pleased with that.

I guess one advantage of being a fat middle-aged man who is quite late to running, is that improvement is pretty easy to come by!

Some new shoes arrived today so I took them out for a spin on the same circuit as above.

My 10km PB is now 46:10 - nearly two minutes better than the above.

I'm stunned how I can now cruise in relative comfort at 7:XX pace when that used to feel like I was really pushing it.

Splits: 7:39 - 7:20 - 7:16 - 7:28 - 7:42 (I did take a deliberate 'rest' in the second half of this mile) - 7:23 - 6:53

Some impressive negative splits there, Bozza. Nice work on the 10k improvement

Toronto
I shall be leaving at 6am tomorrow for an 8 hour drive to Philadelphia for their marathon weekend. We've got about 40 people travelling down from Toronto from both my running clubs, so it's going to be a fun weekend of running and boozing.

I'm going to try and pace my friend to a 1:30 half marathon on the Saturday morning. I think I'm fully over my calf strain now, but I've only really started feeling good about running in the last couple of weeks so we'll see how it goes. I'm also taking part in the 8k less than 2 hours later, but I'm leaving that as optional.

I love how they have the half marathon on the Saturday. It gets it out of the way so we can enjoy all the food and drink Philly has to offer. We'll also get to cheer on the people who've chosen to do the full marathon on the Sunday morning. We're going to create a "Canadian corner" and hand out beers to the runners.

One of my friends is crazy (or just an idiot) because he's signed up to do all three races. Half marathon and 8k on the Saturday, full marathon on the Sunday. This would be fine if he was an ultra runner or had at least put in all the extra training. He hasn't though. He had a bad ankle/shin injury in the summer which stopped him running completely for about 8 weeks. Since then, his longest run has been 20k and he hasn't done more than 3 runs in a week. We keep trying to convince him not to do all three races but he's way too stubborn. I'm just worried he's going to do himself permanent damage. He ran the Berlin Marathon on a stress fracture 3 years ago and couldn't run for about 6 months after that.

Thanks!

The last three miles are all steadily uphill (after a steadily downhill first three) so I was pleased I was able to keep piling on (my version of) the pace until the end. I couldn't help but think back over the last half mile or so to when I first broke 50 minutes for the 10km on that same loop and struggling to hang not to 8:00/mile pace towards the end, whereas today my watch was telling me I was doing 6:XX and I had more in the tank if I wanted to really push.

Frankly, if I'd known I could have jumpped straight from a 48:XX PB to a 45:XX I would have pushed a bit harder!

Finally getting back into running after five months off (laziness not injury) I had forgotten what a civilised corner of NSC this is, nice to be back.

I steer clear of this thread when I'm not running, it just rubs it in how lazy I'm being!

I'm having some mojo issues currently, still getting out and doing the miles but not really any training as such, just enjoying the nice cold weather.

I'm hitting the gym a little bit more as well, to freshen up the training a little bit and with an eye on the Brighton Marathon next year. I've thought about doing Manchester the week before to go for a PB, and then to enjoy Brighton as opposed to racing it as I have in 4 of the 5 I've run now. That being said, big nuts is running it in 2020 so I probably should behave myself and complete our full set of race distances!

9 days into my Monday to Friday 3 month winter swimming regime. It's making me feel brilliant particularly in the back and joints. The core is being worked hard. The flabby gut and the shag handles should be gone by 2020. Working out with reduced oxygen intake feels good too on my breathing.

Initially it's leaving me a bit leg weary but I'm looking forward to see if I can go under 21:30 at Hove Park Parkrun on Saturday.....

That's pretty much me every day, yet I'd describe my mojo as sky high!

I've just reviewed my four runs this week, three of which were following three of my regular routes with no aim other than just running...

Monday: 5.4 miles of muddy hills with the dog, 590ft of climbing - average pace 8:45/mile. Previous best was 9:01/mile.
Wednesday: 7.0 miles of muddy hills with the dog, 831ft of climbing - average pace 9:08/mile. Previous best was 9:40/mile.
Today: 6.3 road - average pace 7:26/mile, nearly 2 minutes shaved off my 10km best.

Inclusive of dog walks, which are nearly all hilly, I've covered 49.5 miles over the last four days, yet my legs feel great.

Running has a habit of kicking you in the bollxxxs when you are on a high and least expecting it. Be careful and don’t forget to warm down/stretch/roll.

I've never warned up and I've never rolled (I assume you mean using a foam roller?)

I also haven't bothered to cool down until the last week or so where, after a couple of runs (and I do literally mean two out of, probably 10-15), I jogged a slow mile after my main run.

You'll probably be not surprised to know that I have spent large periods of time out injured!
