I clocked a new Parkrun PB of 22:05 on Saturday despite not really trying to. Obviously that's good news though as it suggests I'll soon be in the 21s once I turn my attention back to that distance.

My serious training for the half marathon on Saturday concluded tonight with a terrible 18km around Shoreham. I'm hoping it was just down to the fact I ate lunch at 3.45pm and was running by 5pm so felt a bit heavy. But I was really struggling by the end at about 5:35/km. Overall the average was 5:26/km which isn't too far behind my usual 5:15 to 5:20/km training pace for longer runs, but it's never nice to fall off the cliff, especially a few days before my first half marathon. I was going to do a faster 8km or so just to keep my legs moving on Wednesday, but I'm now thinking I might go further to regain some confidence.
Cracking improvement this year, have you got a target time for the Half marathon?

Arundel 10k was tough!! A long long drag up for the first 3 miles and another nasty hill at about 4.5miles.

Finished in 54.26 214/553.

Definitely the toughest 10k I have done, especially as it was a tad warm! However I really enjoyed it, fantastic run through the town, the castle and then the surrounding grounds. I will definitely do this again as I know what to expect next time. It was also nice to get free race photos.

On Monday I tried out a new route and got totally lost and ended up in the grounds of Wakehurst place - ooops!

Another 12.5 miles managed, so 659/1,000 miles now ticked off for this year.

Next up the flat Litlehampton 10k.

Good running, I'll see you in Littlehampton.

I'm just behind you in the annual mileage challenge. Currently tracking at 632 miles for the year, so on for about 950 based on my current figure. That would dwarf my previous highest of just over 800.

August has been my first ever month of hitting 100 miles. 100.40 miles run.

My year total is 100.7 miles but that includes 30+ miles walking. Happy with that as got to 90% of 5k potential from such limited time on my feet. Have now stopped running for the year but currentl training is walking up hills on the Downs as fast as possible. It's incredible how my breathing and sweat levels can match the run in on a Parkrun.

2 weeks slogging up Welsh mountains from next Friday. Base and endurance training I hope.

Hard hiking uphill can easily match a decent running effort......heart rate/breathing similar. It's always part of my long distance training.

1,250 miles so far this year. Was hoping to get to 2,000 but been travelling to much to be able to fit the long runs in so weekly mileage has suffered a bit.

No wonder you are never far from running-fit - isn't this where the SAS do their training? Do you have the 50lb Bergen to carry too?

I might asked have this before, but are you (or anyone else?) by any chance doing the 5k or 10K or half marathon in Seaford on Sunday? I'm slated to do the HM. It looks like a fast if rather boring (4 lap) course. I'll still be very happy with anything under 1:50. It's my first HM for about 10 years.

1:34:00 at Brighton half 10 years back at 47 (5k at time around 19:30) Preferred my 1:38 at Hasting's last year at 56 on a hilly course (5k at time around 21:00).

Out of interest, what are other people's half-marathon PBs? I know Ninja Elephant is a bit of a monster based on his IOW exploits, but it would be interesting to see how other people fare as I'm not even really sure what a poor/average/good time is.

For what it's worth, I'm 30 odd secs ahead of you in the NSC league table (though maybe not for too much longer the way you are improving) and I did my first half in Feb in just under 1:50.

To put it in perspective, I rarely run that sort of distance: it was probably the third time I'd run more than 10 miles (and not done so since), but it was Worthing (so very flat).

I think 1:50 is a realistic goal and more than respectable, but as it's your first you've got nothing to beat so just enjoy it - you'll get a PB!

I've signed up for my second : the Reigate Half in 3 weeks so I'm just starting to ramp up training myself, (I know, I've left it a bit late).

Thanks for the advice (and for editing the table again!). It's appreciated. Having never run at a competitive event over 10k it's extremely useful to know what people with experience would do in the run-up to it. My mind wants to get back out there right now to do another 18km with my normal finish, but I know my legs would pay for it on Saturday if I did. I was obviously dehydrated yesterday as I drank four glasses of squash within five minutes of getting home so I'm hoping the combination of that, the heat and the late lunch is why I was struggling at the end. Based on what you say, I am going to stick to my plan of an 8km run tomorrow and then two days of rest before Saturday:thumbsup:

Thanks. To be honest, as this is my first HM I'm taking it as a bit of a free hit. This is my Manchester City at home - a great occasion and a feeling of satisfaction that I have made it to this level after years of poor (or rather no) performance, but not one in which I'm expecting to impress the neutrals!

In answer to your question, I'll be happy with anything under two hours, but the closer to 1hr 50min the better. My one 21.1km run a few weeks ago was a 1hr 52min and I've done loads of other 16km-19km runs at the same pace, but obviously I don't know what the course has in store on Saturday. I am fairly sure that whatever happens, I'll be getting home on Saturday night and immediately signing up for another HM and getting very competitive about beating my time at that one.

1.36 ish at Brighton about 10 years ago. Haven't run a half since !

Looks like we're heading for another table @CO? I think he'd enjoy compiling the half as much as the 5k.

Ran my first half at 2:00:03. Was devastated for all of five minutes for going over 2 hours but then just enjoyed the moment and relief at completing the race. Best is 1:33 something.

Best half marathon = 1.31.18. Chichester in (brace yourself) 1990 and436th out of 1572.Those were the days! I was quite proud of this until I just checked the results and saw that I was narrowly beaten by the first Woman Over 50. I was 35 at the time.

I've found the Half to be a little bit like the 10k at the moment, I've struggled to really put down the best possible time. My best in a HM is 1:36:02 on the Isle of Wight in 2015, I did run the first half of the Brighton Marathon this year in 1:31odd but I wouldn't count that.

I'm going to have a good go at the longer distances next year, the rest of this year is going to be targeting the 5k - I have an Orange in my sights! And then next year I'm going to step it up in distance. I prefer the longer distances, but I'm learning a new appreciation for short distance running at higher speeds.

I did 4x1mile sprints today, the average pace was 6:27 per mile, the last one was 6:15. I haven't uploaded it yet, still at work and it's on my watch rather than a phone. I'm pretty happy with the splits, I started at the Volks Railway station at the Pier to the Blackrock station. 2nd mile was there to just past the far end of the Marina. Mile 3 was back to Blackrock Volks station, and then the final mile back to the Pier stop. Plenty of foot traffic to obstruct me and the beach cinema was being dismantled as well which was a bit of an obstruction, but solid overall.
