Ah, that's ice pellets your talking about. Just had a mix of that and freezing rain here.

Ice pellets are literally rain that freezes in the last part of its journey so you get jagged little shards of ice.
Freezing rain is similar, but the rain doesn't have time to freeze BUT the water is super-cooled below zero, and it flashes to ice as soon as it hits a surface.

The area around Folkestone is experiencing freezing rain currently, but had ice pellets earlier.

The reason we're getting this is because although it's cold enough for snow through 95% of the atmosphere at the moment, there's a thin later not too far up where the temps are a couple of degrees above freezing.

That's due to recede later, so it will help turn whatever we get this afternoon back to snow.

Well whatever they are they bloody hurt :lolol:

Lots and lots of snow in Crickhowell today, the only vehicles moving are tractors.

It’s snowmageddon.

It absolutely sucks that when we have the coldest temps for donkey years and West Sussex/Surry get hardly any snow. When practically every other County in England gets at least 4 inches or more!

Anyway last bit of cold today before warming up a bit, quite fascinating weather Kent and parts of E Sussex having currently with freezing rain. Quite rare for us in the UK to get this, usually the cold air is blasted out the way but at this time the warm air can't dislodge the cold air. Around midday this warm air goes so snow should be seen instead (not sure along the coast though).

Potentially 2 - 3 cm inland today before a gradual thaw tomorrow onwards.

Anyone over Kent way? M20 is being closed due to freezing rain causing accidents galore!

Getting some very light not-snow here in Uckfield. I know it's not-snow, because the little of it that's making it to the surface is leaving little pock marks in the existing snow cover. Not much of it, though, and the time it's taken to open this thread and type up the report it's stopped.

Edit: looking at the radar we've got pockets of precipitation coming in from East-south-east direction. Pocket of alleged snow crossing the coastline between Hastings and Eastbourne currently, but coming from that direction it won't get very far inland and won't have picked up enough moisture off the channel to get very heavy either. Looks like Emma's off to do nasty things to Ireland today.

West, West, West Sussex.
Freezing rain has landed in the south east.
I saw 6 cars off the road between clacket lane and end of M26 due to ice. I noticed a car in front driving towards me in the fast lane of the M25 before doing a u turn where he had skidded and done a 180. Sitting on the ice rink that is the closed M20 for over an hour now. Should have stayed at home.

Temp down to -0.9c here and light drizzly rain.. If we're going to get freezing rain at least do it properly!

I’ve just taken the week off. The thought of driving to Fishbourne from Worthing everyday to work outside just hasn’t had the same appeal as when I had young kids and a mortgage.
Keep snowing somewhere, c’mon.

I'm guessing a layer of frozen rain with a layer of snow on top isn't great for driving?

Netweather radar showing a small patch of heavy "snow" (but is it?) crossing the coast between Bexhill and Hastings. Anyone out that way able to confirm what's actually falling? Looks like it's on a direct route through Uckfield if it penetrates that far inland.
