REMF 2009 - Walking in a Wardy Wonderland

REMF8
Brighton & Hove Albion 4 - 4 Crystal Palace

Mendoza, Jenkins, Marlowe, Phillips - S Daley (2), Davison, Trilby,

Brighton win 5-3 on penalties.

They will be talking about it for years to come. What a night, the drama, the rubbish football, the amazing goals, the legend that is Ricky Marlowe and the god they call Peter Ward.

You cannot write scripts like that anymore, but REMF8 had it all.
Watched by a crowd of 380 including Albion chairman Dick Knight, a dramatic night was to unfold. Brighton started with Griffin in goal. A back 4 of Martindale, Morris, Huffer and Healey. The midfield 4 lined up with Ricky Marlowe, Barrett, Mellor and Walmsley. Player manager Mendoza started upfront with Peter Ward. Simon Huffer was skipper for the night, as he raised the most sponsorship money, he got the honour for raising a staggering £522.

Brighton started nervously and couldn't get going in anyway. Only a couple of efforts on goal with Mendoza having a looping volley and Wardy hit a free kick straight into the wall. Griffin went off with an injured knee and was replaced by Clayton.

It was Palace that took the lead, after some neat work down their left wing by Daley, and he sped into the box to calmly fire home across the keeper to make it 1-0 Palace.

Palace had the momentum going, and made the most of all their early pressure. Palace swung in a cross from the right, which was cleared by Huffer, but it fell to Davison 30 yards out, who chested down and hit an unstoppable left foot volley into the top corner past Clayton to make it 2-0 Palace. In a tactical switch Coleman came on for Mendoza and Phillips came on for Marlowe.

Brighton only had one more chance in the first half, when Ward showed his skills, produced a Cruyff turn, sent s defence splitting through ball into Walmsley, whose effort was blocked by the Palace keeper.

Half time came, the Albion team need a serious look at themselves, and a change in tactics. Sticking with 4-4-2, the team for the second half started with Clayton in goal behind a defence of Martindale, Phillips, Morris and Jenkins. The midfield quarter were Coleman, Mellor, Barrett and Walmsley, with Mendoza upfront with Green.

The second half started in disaster for the Albion as they lost Barrett to injury, an awkward fall after a challenge resulting in lengthy treatment and a broken collar bone.

It was soon to get worse when Palace got a corner. Trilby swung the ball in, and it evaded everyone and ended up in the back of the Albion net. It was 3-0 to Palace with Brighton looking doomed.

Struggling to get in the game, Brighton needed something special to give themselves a chance. Palace were on the attack, but it was won back by Mellor in centre midfield, he took the ball past a couple of Palace players, before slipping a through ball down the inside right channel for Mendoza to chase. He took a touch and unleashed a shot across the Palace goal keeper to make the score 1-3.

If Brighton thought they had a sniff of salvaging something from the game, it was soon extinguished. Some sloppy defending at the back lead to a Palace attack, a cross came in from the left, but the Brighton clearance squirmed its way to the edge of the box. Daley was on hand to rifle a thunderblaster past Clayton to make the score a richly deserved 4-1 to Palace.

With 20 mins to go, Brighton were awarded a free kick just outside the Palace box. Mendoza, Mellor and Jenkins all argued as to who should take it. Jenkins go the nod, and his effort dipped over the wall and into the goal despite the Palace keeper getting a hand to it. 4-2 Palace.

Ward replaced Mendoza, Schilt for Walmsley and Marlowe replaced Coleman, as Brighton went for broke and switched to 4-3-3. This was the turning point of the game, as Brighton sniffed the merest scent of a comeback

Green, Schilt and Phillips impressed in particular as Brighton began to gain some momentum. A free kick in an identical spot to Jenkins goal was awarded. Full of confidence, Jenkins took it, but this time fired high and wide.

Brighton's pressure finally reaped some reward. Phillips crossed from the right, and Marlowe rose at the back post to header down into the bottom corner to make it 3-4 Palace.

The Brighton team could sense a dramatic comeback and threw everything forward. Mendoza came back on for Green, and everyone went upfront. Brighton won a corner on the right which was taken by Jenkins. He fired it to the back post, were Phillips was waiting to head home and spark wild scenes and a one man pitch invasion.

Unbelievably, Brighton had come from 4-1 with 20 minutes left to salvage a draw, and as is destiny it seems, another penalty shoot out was on the cards!!

Huffer won the toss and elected to take first kicks. It was written in the stars, Peter Ward in front of a packed terrace in a Brighton shirt, with a penalty for Brighton. He notched it in style, sending the keeper the wrong way. Palace scored their first kick too.

The first seven spot kicks were converted. Ward, Mellor, Walmsley and Jenkins converting for Brighton. Man of the Match Seb Daley stepped up to take his penalty. His effort went wide of the post and fittingly it was down to Albion skipper, Simon Huffer, who had raised £500 for REMF to take the deciding kick.

He stepped up with confidence, and unlike Chelsea centre back, skipper, John Terry, scored the penalty to win REMF 8 and maintain Brightons winning streak, taking it seven, with an unbeaten run since 2004

Huffer and Ward lifted the trophy, and a successful night for REMF was completed in style. The celebrations rolled on in to the early hours of the morning, some handling it better than others, but none as well as the man of REMF, Ricky Marlowe, who consumed 17,000 calories withing 6 hours of the final whistle

For me its been an honour and a pleasure to be given the oppurtunity to lead the Brighton REMF team, I'd like to think I did a (four) grand job, and will hang up my managerial cap with my head held hi

Marvellous scenes. Well done everybody for a great night out. Cheap to get in, drinking and smoking on the terraces, massive half pound burgers and half decent coffee.
Half close your eyes and suspend belief and you could have been back at the Goldstone on a freezing cold Tuesday evening. Ward and Mellor up front.:jester:
Good montage Brett, everybody loves a montage.

Also, the Albion winning streak is surely at 6 now, not 7 as stated in the report?

Great job though.

REMF 2009 - Walking in a Wardy Wonderland

REMF8
Brighton & Hove Albion 4 - 4 Crystal Palace

Mendoza, Jenkins, Marlowe, Phillips - S Daley, Davison, Trilby, J Daley

Trilby and J.Daly are the same person.

Scorers were S.Daly, Davidson, J.Daly, Baldwin.

Was a great evening out as ever. Thoroughly enjoyed playing despite the result and how it was settled (again!). Nice little video too.

Will be back next year to play, support the fund and fingers crossed, win.
