Rumbelows, arguably the least glamorous sponsors of the League Cup.

Dan Air
, made a lot of people redundant at Gatwick, I seem to recall

And the predecessor to Iceland (but no less shabby), Bejam

Anyone else get their school uniform from "Broadley Brothers" at the bottom of George St in Hove. Some kind of coffee shop now

We had to buy ours from Kadar Wear in Burgess Hill, which sells the odd combination of school uniforms and underwear for the more mature lady.

Somehow, it is still in existence now.

But instead I shall dig up these bad boys:

Once second only to BA as the largest airline in Europe. Financial mismanagement, the last recession and original gulf war saw to its demise however.

To be honest you could devote a whole thread to airlines that are now defunct.

Remember TWA?

BOAC? (As referenced in the classic Beatles hit Back In The USSR)

Euroworld (ex City Flyer Express, latterly Air Europe Express)

Britannia?

And while we're on the subject of air transport how about the British Airports Authority which no longer exists?

Yes the name BAA still refers to the now Spanish owned firm in control of Gatwick, Heathrow, Edinburgh, Stansted, Southampton and Aberdeen airports but BAA is now an acronym that stands for nothing since Thatcher sold off the Authority.

BAA is NOT the British Airports Authority as this no longer exists.

BAA Ltd simply held on to the initials, despite not being allowed to call itself an "authority" anymore

Sir Adam Thomson, the man who started British Caladonian and his wife live in Brighton, just off Dyke Road.
I did some work at his place a few years ago, he left the Air Force after WW2 with £25.00 in his pocket and started from scratch.
He did not go under but was nationalised because BC was getting bigger than BA and the government did not like it.
He fought tooth and nail to prevent this happening but they did it anyway.
This jaded him as they took away all his lifes work, he got a shit load of money but he did not want it (he already had a shit load).
He tried to do other things in avionics, which failed and according to his wife, he just faded into the back ground like a forgotten man.
When I left England he was starting to get Altzhiemers.
He wrote a book about his life called 'High Risk' interesting read, can get a bit technical in parts but readable, he gave me a signed copy.
A genuine bloke, no airs and graces, never forgot his humble beginnings.
Sir Adam, if you are interested.
Just looked myself, he died in 2000 apparently, belated RIP.

AIR cause he worked in aviation, geddit??

But sorry, our government shat on many an aviation firm, this story doesn't surprise me

I like this quote

Small, quiet and deliberate in manner, Thomson was tough as nails at the boardroom table and in the defence of BCal’s interests. But he was liked by his 7,000 staff; B Cal had an excellent industrial relations record, and paid five percent of its profits into a staff share fund. And though he became a powerful and respected businessman, he remained an aviator at heart.

On the face of it 5% doesn't sound like a awful lot but who works for a company who does that now?

Consider that 5% of Amex's profits comes to 200 million quid and if you split that amongst its entire workforce you'd be looking at over £2,500 each... The guy had the right priorities

I was thinking about this the other day as I was walking along London Road, recollecting the shops that used to be there.

There was Timothy White's, Fine Fare which became International (or was it vice versa?), Granada TV and those Brighton establishments, Bellman's, AA Baker sports and Potters the outfitters (where I got my school uniform).
