There was - a big department store in the Vokins/Hannington's mould. I think it became C&A.

Anyone remember Meakers the outfitters by the arcade. It was a real "Suits you Sir" type of place.

What I can't remember is what was in Churchill Square before it became Churchill Square.

Originally the south side of Western Road was a row of smaller shops, much the same as exists now opposite the old Woolworths etc. I presume that behind the shops was housing, all of which got knocked down to accommodate the original Churchill Square - one of the worst examples of 60/70's concrete architecture.
The buses used to stop there going west. It must have got pretty congested as Western Road was then the same width as it is further west.
