there used to be a rough-ish pub at the 7 dials, rough as in clientele completely out their boxes, can't remember the name, but think it's The Couch now and more of a wine bar ... not that I've been in there.
Worst pub I've ever been into was not in Brighton but out in the 'burbs, as they often are. I walked in there on a random Friday night, quite late, some local DJ playing radio hits. The place was full of real boozers and their rough wives.
I took my pint outside with a view to finishing quick and leaving. Car came up the road, screeched to a halt, did a U turn and proceeded to drive at the crowd outside the pub. I didn't see what occurred but some lad then came running out of the crowd with his top off, covered in blood claiming he'd been stabbed. He tried to ask the landlord for help but got a resounding "**** off".
The regulars just seemed to shrug it off. This was only about 4 years ago. You don't get that kind of crap in Brighton centre.
Wasn't it The Rabbit at one point? On the corner. Blokes used to dart between there and the bookies across the road until they ran out of cash. Depressing hole. Nobody has ever been able to make a go of that pub. It used to have a machine in the bogs dispensing porn DVD's. Classy. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote![]()
Now the French Horn (for about last 2/3 years). Did a serviceable pint of Harveys when I went in there last a few months back but also smells like a pet shop. Weird boozer. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote

yeah the one on the corner, can't remember why I was in there, but one of the regulars fell over trying to get out the door and they laid him across the seats and left him there with blood running down his head. it felt like the wild west. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Always holds bad memories for me. When it was the couch my girlfriend of 8 years at the time and I went for Pizza and beer there, I don't know why, we'd rarely ever go in there and I don't know what happened but we ended up breaking up for good. She left and I remember sitting there with the rankest, floppiest slice of pizza in my hand staring disbelievingly at the TV they used to show films on played Ghost Rider, me with the most uncomfortable lump in my throat trying not to break down. It was one of the most depressing afternoons of my entire life. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
The Constant Service, in fact most of the pubs up near Southover way have all had periods of being a bit dodge. Not rough as such but lots of class A's swilling around as a certain group of drinkers moved around/got barred/ took over the pubs up around there. Seemed to be it's own little world up there. And not a particularly pleasant one to spend much time around. It's extraordinary the amount of pubs in Brighton that go sideways very quickly due to Class A's getting a hold. Many of my favourite pubs have been ruined because of them. And good people as well, good landlords or regulars lose the lot because they let certain things and certain drinkers take priority. There's a lot of unbalanced people in Brighton and if landlords and regulars aren't careful they can get a hold of a pub quite quickly. Shame.
