Was The Snape in Carden amongst them as nobody wanted to lease it and it is now a Sainsburys. I was interested but a pc I knew said it would lose its licence, which it did.
Lovely place back in the day.....

has anyone been in the Cowley Club on London Road? I've never had the nerve to go in (so far)
Not the roughest, as in toughest, but...
The Preston Brewery Tap, in the dying days of the Withdean Era was seriously MANK.
Up to the point of departure of Basil Fawlty lookie-likey Simon, all was good. The Weston's was flowing, the Elvis blaring out full volume, was annoying tho tolerable, Dodgy DVD Man made it your one-stop-shop for an unspeakably poor copy of March Of The Penguins or whatever Film Du Jour was.
Then it all changed and started to look like somebody's school project in how to run a pub. Last time I ever went there in The Withdean Years, we were playing pool. The white ball left the table and fell through a hole in the floorboards. Mate had to fish around under the floorboards thru a century's worth of ratshit to retrieve it. Later, same day, I witnessed some purple-faced old wino bitch feeding red wine to her pitbull out of her glass while aforesaid pitbull sat on the pool table. Never ever went in there again during The Withdean Years.
Went in there recently. STILL looks like somebody's school project in how to run a pub. Tho apparently they run a matchday service to the Amex. So that's good. And as good a plug as they're ever going to get.

You don't get many rough shitholes in Brighton anymore. The property is worth too much to just have 4 ex-cons propping up the bar night after night, year after year. You have to go to smaller towns to find the proper dives that still have character now. And even they won't be around long with gentrification.
