Attendance Figure v Gillingham

Most people who went to the game last night appear convinced that there were well in excess of 7,000 people in the ground. Very hard to see how another 2000 could be fitted in as most areas of the ground appeared to be near-full. Could you please confirm how the official figure of 6,836 was reached. Is it purely done on turnstile clicks, or is there some kind of estimating involved? Thanks.
