Blimey - the things some people put in their lists. That NME one used to be vitally important to me, but I'm over it now. I know I should let people get on with liking what they like and letting me like what I like, but I struggle to understand some choices - but I'll let it go (eg I will not...
That is a list full of things I've not heard of, let alone listened to. Especially down in the 70-100 levels. Lots of album covers that feature either raw meat or look like 1970s satanic doom metal. I may check out some of the higher ranked stuff.
“There’s nothing as outright catchy as X song on Y album, but…”
I like this - always the description of a dull follow-up that the critic is desperate to see some merit in.
She releases several albums a year, so consistency may be an issue. Unfortunately I've now been singing "My daddy is a fireman" to myself for about an hour and a half.
I actually didn't mind the next two after Green, but I gave up completely with Monster or Up (whichever was first). Sometimes it's great to get into a band who've already released loads of albums and be able to go back at your leisure and listen to them - I did this with REM as my first album...
I played it whilst making dinner last night. My wife kept saying "I don't like this one" and "this one's boring". Impinged on my enjoyment a little. One of the songs was only about 57 seconds long anyway. She let the last two songs pass without comment.
I can't stand it - the first album of theirs that I really couldn't live with. Horrid, embarrassing. Didn't mind the one after that so much, although Losing My Religion makes me cringe. I think the correlation between use of the mandolin and quality of song is inversely proportional.
Agreed - I could listen to Murmur and Chronic Town every day. They have a kind of warmer Twin Peaks quality - something strange going on in the sunshine of America. Love the chiming guitars, obscure lyrics and great tunes. When they lost the obscurity and the mystique, they lost everything.
Here's my top ten. I'll do best tracks of 2014 sometime in the next week or so as well.
10. The Last War - Haley Bonar. Quality songs, some Justin Vernon backing vocals, veers from pop with hints of krautrock (Kill The Fun) to crackling campfire desolation and reflection (Eat For Free)...
Blimey. Are we doing this as well? That's a bit of a challenge. Albums of 2014 first, then I'm doing tracks of 2014, if I've any energy left, I'll consider the best albums of the last 5 years.
Great choice man  Will this joyous festival of classic indiepop make my top ten? Maybe. Will the flawless fifth track - the best indie riff in the world bursts out of the speakers in the first six seconds, which is then withheld for four verses and chucked back in your face for an...
That's the spirit - time to cross the floor. I sometimes wonder whether there are other Green Party-voting accountants within half a mile of me at work. However, my next-door neighbour at work approves of the Ride reunion. And he reckons Bob Mould was rubbish last night - too loud and not enough...
I think it helps that the core user group of this thread hold pretty similar political views and are not trolling - you can just sit back and think that people are expressing a genuine opinion with no malicious intent or other agenda. I'm happy to try out most things recommended in this thread...
