I'm going to have to disagree with you - I'm absolutely gutted for Bauer. It felt almost worse than Tony Martin's Vuelta last year. I doubt red numbers will ease the pain somehow. :(
It's a GC day, certainly. Valverde might fancy a crack, but Rodriguez is more likely to be given the space. I doubt Porte has the team or the final kick to get over the line first, especially with Astana watching...
I'm not sure whether to feel sorry for Peter Sagan or not after today. He's had the Green jersey competition sewn up since stage 3, and yet can't catch a break with a stage win. However, he knows people won't work to take him to the finish only for him to take the sprint, so why not go with...
It's a rest day - the traditional moment for doping stories to come out, and for finger pointing to begin! So, who's on the sauce this year?
Personally I think G has to be on something - probably whiskey based on his inability to stay upright. Nothing overly suspicious so far I don't think...
Probably only another 3, if you get the right ones...
Broken tibia and back on the bike. Hardcore. I'm gutted Contador's out. I don't like him, or want him to win, but he climbs beautifully and the Tour was panning out nicely for a high mountains duel. Now it's a bit less exciting, but other...
Henri Desgrange (the inventor of the Tour de France) originally said it would be a success if only 1 rider finished the race leaving everyone else unable to complete it.
Indeed, although Astana are going to be hard to beat in the mountains. Can't see Valverde getting near though. All it could take is a Landis-like solo effort for the overall win.
P&P annoyingly looking at the time gap out of context. Of course the gap's gone back out to 4 minutes - the peloton's been descending for at least 3 while Bertie drags himself uphill.
Not sure why I'm surprised, but sometimes it feels like it's their first day watching cycling or something...
Astana seem to be moving to the front of the bunch. Contador isolated (except for his team car and the longest rear brake 'adjustment' I've ever seen...) 5 minutes down.
Surely we need a P&P Bastille Day Special bingo for today? Feel free to add your own.
"A Frenchman in Yellow on France's national holiday"
"quatorze juillet"
A bar conversation context
"What every Frenchman dreams of"
A sarcastic mention of the World Cup
"Biggest day in professional bicycle racing"
What a bloody brilliant ride from Khadri in horrible conditions. Saxo-Tinkoff looked ok, but Nibs was just marking Contador all the way up the final climb - I don't think we saw much from either. Plenty of time though.
Today's break will stick, GC will have a day off and wait for Monday, which...
Tony Martin certainly IS special, but in the more conventional meaning! Riding on the front (or on your own) is bloody hard work, especially at 35mph+ and getting enough oxygen in is more important than looking pretty! If you want to see someone looking really special keep an eye out for Tommy...
