I think Mike Leigh directed that one: it is a very dark but excellent film. Talking of Loach: my favourite from him is Land and Freedom, a superb film about the Spanish civil war. Mind you, maybe it's only old lefties that will enjoy this. Back to Leigh: Maybe not my favourite British films, but...
