Sorry but I entirely disagree. This is voter suppression aimed at those least likely to support/vote for an increasingly right wing government. The side benefit for Patel promoting more authoritarian policing is a side benefit.
The government have made no such proposal as far as I know.
To be non-discriminatory in terms of suppressing votes a card must be free and issue must be automatic and not based on application
A driving licence costs from a few hundred pounds upwards allowing lessons/tests etc. and won’t be available to a great many.
A passport costs a minimum £85 I think and again not all have one.
These are financially out of reach for very many people.
