Throughout his tenure at Albion and increasingly so, Gus openly touted himself for other jobs. This pre-dated any supposed "permission" and aggravated if not entirely alienated many fans who were less than amused that he made it very clear that the club they love was not good enough for Gus...
My only source is from the boardroom of another club where they were singing Bloom's praises for standing up to the "tradition" of simply paying off managers. They viewed it as a potentially important milestone.
That said, the only thing we know for sure is that we don't know.
Nothing revisionist in any of that.
Let himself down.
Let the fans down.
Let the club down.
And if I am tempted to feel some sympathy with those whose heads he turned it is wholly mitigated by the cash in their pockets.
