Well, from my understanding (and no, I've not read the whole thing, I admit), it appears as though he's devolving a few of the decisions in terms of police budgets to the Police & Crime Commissioners' office. These are of course elected (and political) posts, so there will presumably be a degree...
The tax relief on mortgage interest was binned in the last budget, wasn't it? That's due to kick in from 2017 I think.
The question is, whether this will dissuade investors snapping from up empty properties in the hope of making a profit on them, or whether it will simply cause existing...
Of course not :)
The nature of politics is that every decision will be considered and ultimately pooh-poohed by an opposition, as has happened here. I see Andy Burnham (for example) seems to be taking credit for the apparent u-turn on police spending.
Perhaps Bozza's explanation re tax...
Exactly what I'm thinking. He's allocating more money to the NHS. He's changed his mind on the cuts to tax credits. He's not cutting the police budgets.
So what's the bombshell? What have we missed so far that's going to fill the gap?
Absolutely stunned that he's not slashing police budgets...
This. If the burglary is something that's happened while you're out and could have been at any point in the preceding eight hours, with the perpetrators long gone, the police are never going to race round. I believe the policy is that they get responded to within an hour (might be two, not sure)...
Out of interest, I'd like to ask something. Ambulance services are monitored on response times to 999 calls. The police aren't, at least not to the same degree.
Say you live in a medium sized town in West Sussex, and you wake up at 3am to find two burglars in your house. Assuming you dial 999...
Couldn't agree more the live within your means theory. It's absolutely necessary for public bodies to save money where they can, and to be as efficient as possible. No issue with that whatsoever: why anybody would argue otherwise is just silly.
But your statistics are plain wrong. To suggest...
Ditto
People would be amazed if they realised how few police there are available to respond to 999 calls at any given time. Particularly if you live in certain areas of the county (and I'm not talking about small villages here but a few, fairly decent sized towns that no longer have...
