[Misc] Religion - the Church of England - what future?

As you well know, I put a caveat in brackets at the end of this paragraph stating that I am aware that not all religious people believe these things, you know, the bit that you have cropped off.

See, I agree with you in essence but where do you draw the line at letting someone believe in their religious views? What if they believe gays should burn in hell or that it is ok to beat your wife or that being a suicide bomber is aiding god? Do we stand back and say fair enough, that is what...

[Misc] Religion - the Church of England - what future?

Great post and you bring up a lot of really interesting points. I am guilty as an atheist of questioning the faith of the religious I admit and although this is not a full justification of why I do it I will explain my reasoning; I am absolutely staggered that anyone can believe the stories of...

[Misc] Religion - the Church of England - what future?

The complete opposite. If you believe that this is the only life then you realise how precious it is and make the most of every single day. I have found with a lot (not all) of religious people that they are constantly considering the afterlife, heaven, hell and how to get in rather than...

[Misc] Religion - the Church of England - what future?

Of course I would hope, my point was that if god only answers those that pray or ask for help but would happily sit back and let those who do not ask for help suffer then I cannot see how god is good.

Genuine question, are you saying that god would happily sit back and watch people suffer, get murdered and raped unless they ask for help?

It would also be very stupid to be selectively filter out those parts of Christianity to pretend they do not exist.

I think this explains where the story came from pretty well. The virgin birth, the three kings, the rising after three days.

So I guess you are ignoring the nasty bits in the bible then?

How is that my own interpretation? Having attended religious schooling for primary and secondary school then I would love to say I have only had positive experiences but some of the guilt trips that are put upon you are awful. Also you say Christians are good people, can you really say over 2...

No one should need a guide to not steal, knob someone else's wife or kill. That is the point.

The 1st commandment of the bible and the first pillar of the Qu'ran instruct people to not follow any other god. Arrogant much? Yes, I have also been told about going to hell for not being a believer.

Religions tell non-believers that they are sinners or going to hell for not believing so forgive us if we are a little rude back.

Ok then, I do not need an out of date text to tell me what is right or wrong.

I do not need the threat of a man in the sky watching everything I do to be good and moral.

You mean we should go back to being sexist, homophobic and threatening people with hell? I would say the loss of religion in the last 50 years has allowed us to move towards gender equality and sexuality rights, countries that are still religious are a long way behind in these respects.
