    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

Well, since this thread doesn't appear to be about the Russia Ukraine war any more, Who's your preferred choice, Sunak or Truss ? Or are you still pining for another dose of Johnson

I think that's a little unfair. Very few Australians seem to come on NSC pissed and angry, go into incoherent tedious rants with no punctuation except for LOADS of full stops, then sober up and try and back track the next day

I think there's very few on NSC who appreciate how lucky we are to have such an expert on Global politics on the board to correct us  I think the word randomiser and sticky full stop button on your keyboard tends to hide your true expertise

Although I can see the case for direct Military action, I still think Sanctions are a better way to stop him due to the interconnectedness of commerce and trade. The only problem is that Sanctions are a bit like the nuclear deterrent in one regard. Two weeks in, we still don't know whether those...

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

Imagine loudly proclaiming your support for someone or something, over a long period of time, to then rather naïvely discover you were actually 'batting for the other side' all along without realising. I really can't imagine envisage what you would do, other than change your account, obviously...

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

To be fair, we had two parliamentary votes about whether we should bomb Syria two years apart. Each vote was whether to bomb and came up negative, even though the British Parliament voted whether to bomb the opposite side each time  But let's get back to the current issue and the...

:flounce: 2/10 Disappointingly, although you obviously have far more experience as a result of your previous flounces, you seem to be getting worse at it. Have you thought that maybe you have peaked and it's time to try something else. Back on topic, I think that this ramping up of military...

But surely an Independent Sovereign state has complete control over it's borders, immigration, priorities, laws, timing and decision making so there must be another reason for this. Maybe you shouldn't be so entrenched in your view of this Government and just give them a chance

Because most of them are young frightened conscripts who have no idea where they are or why, and have spent the last few years being indoctrinated to salute and do what they are told to do. I'm a little surprised that I have to explain this given what has happened in every conflict for the...

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

I think the noises coming out of the Kremlin in the last few hours are positive for everyone who wants to stop the war. The West really needs to ramp up support, militarily, socially and economically. It's getting on for two weeks now so there is really is no excuse for the West not increasing...

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

I would hope all four are behind this statement from the Kremlin. It's not for us to decide what happens next, but for the people of Ukraine. In the meanwhile we need to keep up the pressure and support, militarily, economically and socially until there is an agreement that Ukraine find acceptable

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

I'm genuinely sorry if I am a pain, I can be very pedantic in a debate but always try to back it up with evidence and try to stick to the rules of NSC and engage in reasoned debate on subjects that interest me like Gardening, Government and the Albion and don't believe I have changed the way I...

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

Thanks. I'm afraid it is still paywalled. Or the Telegraph just don't like me. I'm afraid that as soon as I saw the headline, I recognised the Cabinet Press office panicking and when I tried to find it, saw it had only been released to limited sources. Well at least someone in Downing Street is...

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

Let's be clear, nobody was moaning about 'a few expensive boats' but lots of posters have moaned about the speed with which Britain is introducing sanctions. Liz Truss gave a headline which I can't find anywhere but The Daily Telegraph which because of the Telegraph's paywall, I haven't been...

Thanks for that. Would always welcome an expert's view over a politician's one

My Ukrainian neighbour has been worried sick all week as her parents left Kyiv a week ago and have been travelling across Ukraine to the Czech Republic. Just spoken to her and they have arrived safely in Prague

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

Agree with this, but that isn't the reason for the need for urgency in ALL sanctions being introduced. If you believe that sanctions are the way to stop Putin (which I do) then the urgency is that there are lives being lost every single day that those sanctions are delayed resulting directly in...

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

Every other country is doing them legally. You just seem to be going round in circles trying to come up with excuses for Britain not introducing sanctions  and with that I'm out :bigwave:

    [Politics] Russia invades Ukraine (24/02/2022)

But surely every country has to implement the sanctions within their legal framework or change that framework. I'm struggling with the 'do them for show' bit. Maybe you could point out some other countries sanctions that you think have 'been done for show' and aren't meaningful to help me...

So you are saying we can bring in sanctions in the same way others have, or continually attempt to justify reasons not to ??? I'm glad you cleared that up.
