The key point is that some people are concerned that it's recording everything you say, private conversations that could be hacked, sold, used against you (eg blackmail). That doesn't happen.
I bought another Dot and posted about the offer here. I wasn't after the Echo, I prefer the Dot.
Which is quite different to Alexa recording private conversations.
Yes, they can log things that are said to the device. So yes, if you say 'Alexa, play some rock', that can be logged (not against your name, but as an occurrence). Just as it is logged when you do a search on google. That is extremely different to the device recording your private conversations.
It's plenty good enough for a sound bar. I've set one up with a sound bar (connected via 3.5mm to RCA left/right) in my mum's kitchen, and the Echo Dot is not (even nearly) the week link.
Now if you have a stereo amp and speakers worth over a thousand, and good speaker positioning in a decent...
What sound quality are you after - ie, what do you currently have etc?
It depends what quality you're after. Bluetooth to an external speaker will give you some music in your room, but it won't be high quality. You'll get better from the 3.5mm jack output, and although that's still not hi fi...
I don't know if you're just joking or if you actually think that happens.
The device constantly listens for the 'wake' signal (Alexa). Once it hears that, the light switches on, and it processes what you say next, probably doing an internet search. You can see on the app what data it's sending...
And I'm not pouring scorn on people who don't need it. Some people don't listen to music etc. But saying it's no more convenient that playing music on your PC is just daft.
That's a separate argument, and while it holds no water, I realise people are skeptical of new things like this.
Many...
So when you're chopping food in the kitchen, it's easy to just play some music from your PC? And you have PCs in several rooms? No.
You have a poor imagination.
Your loss.
"The companies will begin rolling out the experience through an invite-only beta test later this year, with general availability in 2017."
I don't think it's ready yet, but when it is, you should be able to use Alexa to tell Sonos what to play.
If you want high quality music, you can use a...
The novelty of asking for jokes or facts might wear off for many. There are more useful things though, I use mine constantly:
Every time I make a cup of tea, I use it to set a timer.
Every time something goes in the oven, I use it to set a timer (there's a timer on the oven too, but Alexa can...
Size and price. If you want to use the internal speaker, the echo would be better. If you can use external speakers, you want the dot.
Er, you're welcome.
Very.
Links to Spotify premium, and you can also set Spotify as the default service, so that when you ask for music, it always goes to Spotify. We have 3 of the Echo Dot, all connected to stereos.
They were on sale for Amazon prime day.
