Jo Konta - the 'British' thing

I'm sure a lot of the stakeholders would love a woman winner of SPOTY, so could be a good shout. If you discount the joke win of Zara Phillips in 2006, and that was 11 years ago, not one since Kelly Holmes in 2004. Konta is already in to about 3-1 2nd fav now, though that will go out again if...

Jo Konta - the 'British' thing

I think underlying a lot of the views on this is the glee with which the media leap on some recently UK-passported individual who might gain sporting success, when they spend the rest of the year unashamedly slaughtering all things 'immigration'. Watched the (brilliant) Zola Budd/Mary Decker...

Their main source of income is Wimbledon profits, about £40million a year I think. I don't know how much the AELTC ask them to prove the effectiveness of how this money is spent. You'd hope they do.

What do we call Murray Mount for Konta, then? Hungary Hill? Sydney Slope?

Jo Konta - the 'British' thing

You'd love the LTA to be exposed to the same sort of funding scrutiny and pressure as, say, UK Sport over Olympic funding. Having to justify and show 'medals' for the millions.

You're not wrong there. The Daily Mail the worst offender, hate Europeans, hate immigrants, hate everyone who doesn't live in Kensington basically - and wetting themselves over Konta.

This is about sport though - not immigration, refugees, or working across borders. Who you represent, as most people would imagine that would always be one country, but as we know it isn't. Konta represented Oz at junior level in Grand Slams, so you can't blame them for being a bit peeved.

Also, good pros that they were, neither got past 3rd round of Wimbledon so not really going to be the subject of such focus. Sad reminder about Baltacha though - what a tragedy that was,

Great line from Konta in that NY Times piece - "I'm pretty much the female version of Jason Bourne"

Great point. I had a look at their last accounts the other day. They spend £19million a year on 'participation', and almost £30m a year on marketing, major events etc. As far as I can see they don't reach many/any young kids from non- middle class backgrounds with that money. If they spent it...

Jo Konta - the 'British' thing

Just been having a look at the Aussie press today. Unsurprisingly Sydney Morning Herald headline: 'Born and bred Sydney-sider starring for Great Britain at Wimbledon'. Somehow the fact they are pissed off makes it all a lot funnier.

I suppose the 'sounding British' can occasionally be deceiving. Virginia Wade sounded (still does) like a South African, but was actually born here to British parents, moved there for 14 years then came back.

Jo Konta - the 'British' thing

Does it matter to you that she has the Hungarian parents and was born and raised in Oz? Only asking really because of the sheer level of media hysteria now she has done something at Wimbledon, and has a chance of winning the tournament and making history for Britain. I think she switched...
