For Saturday 3pm kick-offs I get the 13:55 train from London Road. It's usually got 8 carriages and I usually have the front coach more or less to myself. Which is nice, but it points to severe shortcomings in the way the trains are loaded at Brighton station.
I think that this is maybe key. As the extra trains laid on for the Albion for weekday matches wouldn't be there on a normal weeknight, then maybe its not quite so important that they leave on time (other than for maybe railway-related signalling issues or something) rather than they leave...
There's more than a bit of truth in that. Same is there is in the eyes of anybody that runs football. They always just assume that somehow football fans will turn up in their thousands no matter how crap the transport arrangements or on how short notice they rearrange a fixture to something way...
Have you taken a look up there recently Lord B? The South Stand turnstile area is already a fully tarmac'ed parking area, albeit behind locked gates and a wire mesh fence. To my admittedly untrained eye, all it would need is a some white lines painting, some additional sign-posting and to unlock...
I think there has to be far more alternatives available for transport than there are currently, as the current options appear to be failing large numbers of 'customers'. Why not a major taxi rank at the stadium (or somewhere pretty damn close that doesn't fall in the clutches of Lewes District...
Credit where its due, I thought trains back into town after the game were excellent. OK, so that was partly due to a train that was supposed to come at (I think) 2145 was five minutes late, allowing more people to file down on to it, then there was one another couple of minutes after that...
