That was down to the poor quality of uniform given to our troops, no matter where they were. It was even worse in the Middle East.
The climate in the Falklands is equivalent to the Shetland Islands. The Falklands are over 400 miles from Argentina.
Endurance wasn't finishing, just coming back to the UK as per normal. The Argentinians didn't know the climate of the Falklands or else they wouldn't have invaded at the start of winter. Their conscripts were wearing cotton uniforms.
The ice patrol ships Protector, then Endurance always came back to the UK in May as the southern winters set in. They went down again in October. I had three Christmases in a row without my Dad.
Now the new Protector stays down there most of the time, and the crew changes every so often by...
My Dad did three years on Protector in the 60s. I have loads of photos of South Georgia, the Falklands and Antarctica.
Bless him, he was so upset, he went to the recruiting office, aged 62, and tried to join up again. He said he could do an office job to release a man for the fleet. Of course...
