It's funny how comfortable I am breathing off to the left but so difficult when going right. I did get a little better, but there were some strokes when I only breathed in water, which I found wasn't as effective. I just slowly breath out when my head is back under water almost the moment I've...

Well that was messy. Trying to breath on a shorter stroke and alternating sides was asking for trouble. I added to that my first swim for a couple of weeks without a pull buoy, and still my legs still seem pretty superfluous to the whole endeavour. I guess it wasn't all bad as I managed an...

I've tried breathing off to the right and I nearly drowned!! I do exhale, working on the theory that I need to maximize my momentary breathing in time. I'll try breathing every 6th stroke (3rd right arm rotation) and I'll have another go at alternating the sides, but I don't hold out much hope...

Breathing was going to be one of my next questions. I take a breath off to my left every fourth right arm rotation. This seems considerably longer than everybody else, who mainly breath every stroke or alternates. Should I be trying to breath more?

As I was riding last night after Lil Miss Stat's lesson I didn't bother with a swim, instead just watching from the side. The swimmers lane only had one bloke in it and, although a chunky monkey, he was effortless FS-ing up and down. No splashing about, no leg drag, plenty of speed, no need to...

Hmmm technique dependent really isn't the sport for me, at the best of times. I can feel myself getting more 'swim fit' quite quickly, thanks to the tips from here. Probably based on such a initial low benchmark, I guess I should settle for that, and any other general info as I 'progress'.

That's kind of where I'd like to get to, but it's clear that swimming isn't for me. It's probably a bit 'catch 22'. There just isn't the enjoyment factor, swimming is just a necessary 'evil' as the pool is down the end of my road, and I have to take Lil Miss Stat. I had a rough ride yesterday...

I can't imagine how my effort to fair under scrutiny. I'd like to swim 'properly' just because I'm sure it would take a lot the effort out, although I doubt I'll be able to change, old dog new tricks.

I'm just back from my first 'proper' swim for a couple of weeks. I'm still doing reps of 50m x breaststroke followed by 50m x FS. Today I managed to squeeze into the same 20 minutes an extra 100m. All 300 metres of FS was done with a pull buoy, and by jimminy do my shoulders know about now.

I guess the question is:- 'should I be noticeably quicker or slower with a pull buoy? My logic says I should have been slower, as I wasn't using my legs. The fact that I wasn't means I don't have legs, just fleshy anchors. But what do I know

Hello again, people of the pool. As the weather has stopped my traditional, after work, Tues lunchtime 10 mile TT, I thought I'd go for my first post thread swim. I did my usual 500m in 20 mins 2 x breaststroke 2 x Freestyle x 5. I remembered deletebeepbeepbeep telling me to use a pull buoy...

This is all great stuff, it's a shame that by the time I've reminded myself of all the advise on this thread, it'll be time to leave. I'd be surprised if I'm twisting and crossing my arms, I imagine my freestyle to be more of a 'windmill' stroke, esp when I drag my hand across the bottom of the...

I don't see there being much call for a 500m swim followed by a 100 mile bike ride, with ABSOLUTELY NO RUNNING between disciplines. I guess I'm lucky my local pool is Littlehampton, which is just a pool. Today from 4:30 to 5 I had the big boys lanes to myself while the kids had their lessons...

Thanks chaps, some great stuff already. This is the first period of time I've ever swum regularly and certain the first time I've been swimming to the point of out of breath tiredness. Once I've got a little more confidence in my abilities I'll certainly be following plenty of this advise...

That is my other issue. I swim 2 x breaststroke followed by 2 x front crawl. So for 500 metres all I have to do is count to 5, then I know I'm done. It's scary the amount of times I have to double check in my head, 'is this 3 or 4', I assume that'll be the boredom.

Ah you might just be the man. We swim for the same amount of time and I'm 'only' 500 metres slower   While taking Lil Miss Stat to her swimming lessons, I swim in the 'grown ups' lane. My thing is I know I'm a very basic swimmer, but occasionally I'll swim a 25m length really...

    The Official NSC swimming thread

NSC seems to be missing a specific thread for one third of a triathlon. I get the feeling this may well sink quickly (see what I did there) but I'm hoping there's some serious NSC swimmers, of whom I can ask some advise.
