Thorpe retired immediately before the 2005 Ashes, after Pietersen was preferred in the squad for Lords.
With hindsight, we should have picked Thorpe over Bell (notwithstanding his fielding at short leg), but Bell averaged 297 in tests going into that series so it was probably a fair call...
If I come across like I'm overthinking this, it's very much the sort of thing I occupy my mind with while sat on the train.
I went for peak Harmison over peak Flintoff, partly because he often seemed to take more wickets than his bowling seemed to deserve, while Flintoff always seemed to take...
I considered picking Bell just for his fielding at short leg.
But with the best will in the world I'm not sure I can get behind his best day or innings being better than Pietersen, Root or Stokes'.
I think having Flintoff and Stokes either weakens the batting for a bowler you won't get much use...
I'm probably guilty of unfair expectations, but I didn't think Buttler played his natural game often enough in tests.
Most of the time he seemed to nudge his way to about 30 and then get out.

I'm assuming we're at home.
* Edit: I decided to go for Strauss over Vaughan since he could field in the slips.
