It's not the ONLY technology. VAR uses technology. The idiots don't always make the right decisions when using the technology but the technology itself is working fine. The only instance of the technology not working is the goalline technology in the Villa v Sheff Utd match.
It doesn't need an army of people. It needs one or two. You don't need the techies providing the pictures on board. You're not bribing the team. You're bribing the officials. There are hundreds of millions, even billions, staked on the Asian betting markets every day. There are bets about...
The Spurs match, even more than the offside error in the Palace match, was the point where I began to think this may well be corruption rather than incompetence. 4 (or 5) incorrect decisions all in favour of 1 team in 1 match requires a very special level of incompetence.
But it's already happened in Italy and Spain. Starlizard has an integrity division that works with La Liga and some other leagues to identify dodgy match betting patterns that could indicate match fixing. Barcelona are currently accused of bribing officials for 20 years.
Shady betting syndicate is my guess, as has happened in cricket on a number of occasions, as well as in other football leagues. It's more effective to buy corrupt officials than to buy corrupt players. It happened in Italy and is alleged to have been happening for 20 years in Spain.
It's either a mistake or deliberate.
The Dunk penalty decision was just as bad as the Mitoma one. The 2 goals disallowed for handball (by VAR) were awful decisions.
IMO the incompetence theory breaks down wrt the Spurs v Brighton match. I mean, what are the odds of the officials getting 5 game changing decisions wrong in one match and all in favour of the same team through incompetence alone? The Palace offside where they failed to notice the other defender...
VAR does not make decisions except for offsides so it's always "inconclusive" anyway. If VAR feels that the referee might change his decision if he has another look they tell him to go to the screen.
Well, despite the fact that we lost, the Spanish VAR officials did a superb job in the AEK match, ensuring we got the 2 obvious penalties that the useless Estonian ref missed. I suspect Attwell would not have given either of them.
