This potentially makes the assumption that all Catholics in Northern Ireland are Republicans and want a united Ireland, which I believe isn’t quite as clear as all that, and that all of Southern Ireland want to import all the hassles, problems and issues of Northern Ireland into their otherwise...
There were a few good quotes last night on this along the lines of the Scots having the assembly they wanted and instead of trying to use the powers they already have in trying to get devolution to work, they just want to grab more power without having used the ones they already have!
That...
Supposition really, we’ll never know.
We can say that even though he was possibly voted in to ‘get Brexit done‘ (whatever that means), it has been other factors and other things the Tories have done that have made them unpopular. So it shows how you can’t just say that you stand on one policy...
I know that’s what the SNP are saying, but actually I was a bit surprised about how quickly that argument was dismissed on Newsnight with essentially saying that you can’t ever run a general election on a single policy because there are so many other factors involved that can’t be ignored. I’d...
Well a very relevant point is that in the last general election the SNP had 45% of the vote, with a turnout of 68%, so barely more than 30% of the Scottish electorate actually voted for them!
Newsnight covered it well last night. The General Election, despite what the SNP want, does not give any mandate on a single issue such as independence.
Not at all. You say ‘if there is substantial evidence’ but that is only the start of the argument. The SNP argue that even a 50.1% vote for them in the general election is enough to demonstrate that there is a mandate whereas I and others have questioned how that can be so. Newsnight last...
So you keep running these votes whenever either party wants them? Just in case there’s a swing one way or the other? Shall we say monthly, or is that a bit too long to wait?
What also gets me is that they refer to getting just 50.1% of the vote once either in a referendum or the election as a mandate for independence. That does not prove a clear and consistent majority to make such a major constitutional change, it might be due to some very short term issues only...
