Golden boy Root smashes the winning run. Who on earth could have seen this result after the Lord's fiasco?
Vindication of promoting Bell to 3 and dropping Balance. Vindication of selecting Finn.
Will Hales get the nod over Lyth? Hales will be playing at home, that might tip the scales...
I feel the same way about Hales opening a test for England the same way as I feel about Andy Burnham or Yvette Cooper becoming Labour leader - if they were all that they'd have got the gig by now.
It would be ironic if Bell - a man dumped out of England's one-day team because he scores too slowly - then went on to score the fastest Ashes fifty. Perhaps he'll be more circumspect against Johnson?
Weird that Clarke only brings Johnson on when England are already 39% of the way there.
I wonder whether Clarke dropped Bell because his focus was on the three boundaries already hit in the over and the fact he'd cocked up by not starting Johnson straight after lunch?
Warner has 75% of Australia's runs. The all-time record in a test innings is 67.34%. Would LOVE to see him stranded on 99 with the rest of his team all out for single figures!
Just back to the opener debate, I wonder whether there's a case for Buttler opening instead of Lyth and Eoin Morgan coming in at 5 after Root?
Buttler will score quickly against the new ball, and this will take the pressure off Cook to force it as he has recently had to do. You don't really...
England's second innings collapse in the Lord's test and the fact they're batting last here at Edgbaston mean that any target of over 150 gives Australia a chance, probably 225 means it's an even game.
Therefore, as things stand, Australia would need to score 310 in their 2nd innings to leave...
Well the pressure was all on Bell and he came up trumps, batsman of the day, a run a ball fifty giving England impetus. I don't have a problem getting out playing his shots when he'd already notched his half-century, on this pitch there's going to be a ball with your name on it soon enough...
