29th of May 1979 if memory serves me right. It was at The Centre and I had just arrived back after the Albion tour of the USA.Thats how I can remember it.
Those Stranglers gigs were legendary at The Top Rank . Pretty sure the cover of Something Better Change was taken st the Top Rank.
I like to think they dedicated the Flock of Seagulls chant from Toiler of the Sea, to us when they played The Centre on the Black and White tour.
Remember both speakers coming off the upstairs balcony onto the stage and the bloke in the middle of the dance floor swinging the microphone round his head like a lasso.
Remember that Banshees gig well. Was at most of the gigs you mentioned as well.Remember the 999 gig where a little got on stage and played guitar on one of their songs.
The Clash where Pete Townsend played Garageland in the encore and The XTC gig where the power went off and the crowd sang Statue...
Got to disagree with you there.Love The Subs. From legendary gig come mass brawl at The Top Rank to the Haunt last year. Not been a year where I havn't seen them.
24/05/14 UK Subs at The Haunt for Charlie Harpers 70th birthday party.
Got loads of posters of various punk bands at the Top Rank. Some have quite few layers underneath of older posters. They are so thick, they are like wood.Used to use nails rather than blu tac to stick em on the wall
Remember it well.Supposed to be their last ever gig.Still got the poster I nicked off the wall outside the Top Rank.Supported by The Test Tubes. The Rejects headlined a tent at Download a couple of years ago.
If I remember right that was after Charlton away.
Also remember Madness in there.Same day as we played Leeds at home.Brighton skins and other skins battered Leeds outside The King and Queen after the gig.Pretty feisty night inside and outside the venue.
It was a great venue.Home of punk and post punk bands.Anything from Secret Affair, Sex Gang Children, Alien Sex Fiend, King Kurt, The Exploited, The Addicts, Blitz.I even remember them decking it in cobwebs and turning it into The Batcave club for a night. Is it me , or did it all seem to happen...
Used to go to the Alambra a lot . Sundays seemed to be The Piranhas and Nicky and the Dots . Underneath the Alambra was The Inn Place. Every Thursday was The Tangerine Temple. Cost £1 and a penny and played late sixties psychedelia. Great times.
Xtreems / New Regent at the bottom of West Street...
