We missed out on Abraham due to a (fairly established) PL club offering a 'sweetener' that we weren't prepared to match on principle. Neither were Newcastle. I doubt he was anywhere near our main target and he still has alot to prove.
If you believe reports our interest in Mooy diminished...
No toys out the pram here
I simply said your statement of 'we could spend 100m and still get relegated' is a ridiculous one to have in a discussion about improving our squad. We could also spend nothing and win the league I suppose, it's just a bit unlikely.
Well the encouraging thing for me is we must still be on our A choice of striker, since there have been no credible links to strikers other than Abraham and Brown who would both presumably have been cover.
Unless of course, we aren't actually interested in one
What a ridiculous way of looking at things. Bringing in quality will improve our chances, and we need serious quality in a couple of positions to stand a fighting chance. That's what a recruitment team is for.
Tomori played in 10 games. Akpom played in 10 games and would have been more had we not been lucky with injuries. There is absolutely no doubt we need 2 signings to replace those.
A new CM is potential hard competition for Sidwell/Kayal/Norwood and is a position we already know the club want to...
I have no idea how you have reached that conclusion.
To me it looks like he is suggesting replacing Casper, Tomori, Ince, Kaz and Akpom from last season - a 37yo retired GK, 2 incoming loans and 2 outgoing.
+ 2x Striker/ACM, one of whom would replace Towell, who will be going out on loan.
One of those strikers will be a non-squad filler ie. an Izzy Brown (unfortunately)
If we were to bring 2 strikers into the squad, in addition to a CM and a Winger then we would have squad omissions and therefore need to sell one of Skalak, Norwood, Hemed or anyone else considered least likely...
Baffling. So we are now going to utilise players in the PL from our Championship squad that were loaned out and deemed not good enough? That doesn't sound very likely.
Average of 60k a week per player in a 25 man squad then. So if our wage bill matches/exceeds the 74M we cannot increase it by more than 7M a year?
What if our wage bill is substantially less than that?
The obvious answer, at least to me, is the not fee itself but the salary required to land them.
I'm sure we are quite willing to throw 15M+ at a proven goalscorer but it doesn't stop there and we probably have a wage ceiling that will hinder us. No doubt strikers command the biggest salaries as...
4411 in both halves.
The season before last I would have been extremely confident with Stephens & Kayal being our first choice CM partnership in the PL, but Kayal is struggling to return to previous form despite quite a few opportunities last season. There's a possibility he could be outmuscled...
