I only use paper money in businesses that don’t accept cards. Locally that means the chippie, hairdresser and Chinese takeaway. I use an internationally traded digital currency called sterling that backs my digital transactions. I am actually up to speed on bitcoin like scams from my career in...

My trading is only in derivatives so perhaps I’m learning something here. I wouldn’t get involved in a market that bans naked shorting. If you have enough money to cover the margins I don’t see the problem. Equally why wouldn’t hedge funds simply trade a derivative with a bank as it is size and...

How exactly does that work ? There are many more trades on shares than shares because of derivatives. It’s not shady. There is no confusion over title because there is no title in a derivatives trade. It is simply an exchange of risk of future price and nothing to do with ownership.

If your pension is experiencing levels of volatility seen in Crypto then you have it with the wrong money manager.

Of course you are. Crypto is often lauded as some sort of counter culture hip ideology. The problem with this delusion is that this asset class has for ages been a career destination for the same old city financial engineers. It is as mainstream as any other instrument except with beads in its hair.

Be careful. That urge could be addiction to position holding. I have been a professional trader for 35 years and the key is cold decision making based on strong fundamental views. The rest is gambling.

Some are saying volatility in these markets will be reduced by approval of the ETF. The big question is will it start to behave like an equity or a commodity and which one ?

Just to add; there is also an economic case against crypto which is that it does not represent the sum of hard work. The value of a ‘real’ currency is determined by supply and demand, which in the long term represents the strength of economic activity of one community relative to another...

Some good news for crypto bulls; https://www.finews.asia/finance/34703-intertrust-hedge-funds-to-significantly-increase-crypto-allocations Disclaimer; I am just an interested bystander. I have no crypto holdings and never will have as I don’t trade in a market I don’t understand.

I remember those days well. Lots of characters. The name Moose does ring a bell but as I say I only dabbled in softs. Yes, those lunches could be quite lengthy. My boss once went out for lunch and didn’t get back for 3 days ! Soft commodity trading was pretty archaic with everyone standing...

I’m in commodities. It’s flown by tbh, probably because I have expanded the range of markets I trade. From Precious to Carbon and Power via Oil, Base Metals and Iron Ore. I remember those overnight borrowing spreads in 2008 very well as I was on the wrong side of them as a captive client to an...

A lot of them did yes, and made a lot of money. Remember that professional traders are the casino. They make the markets. Investors walk in the door, are given some nice drinks and have their pockets picked :)

I have been a front office trader for over 30 years :) and I agree with Tyrone but not for the reasons he mentions. Pretty much everyone in the market looks at fundamentals so it’s not that. Rather, I think the distinction centers upon what you are trying to achieve. A trader wants to make his...

Yes, you’re right. I was talking about hot shot traders that are swooned over by the likes of CNBC. For a long term investor the returns in crypto have been astounding but still some people contrive to lose money by muddling the short and long term as trading horizons.

There are plenty of reasons, including changes in US monetary policy and concerted efforts by China to undermine the ‘currency.’ I first came across this thread quite recently and find it a little disturbing that so many people are only buying because it has been going up. There are no...
