26th fastest time up hautacam for nibali! He would have been 2.5 minutes behind Riis record from 96!
Peraud for 2nd and valverde 3rd based on tt ability, I reckon.
Obviously it's impressive but they go up the tourmalet at about 13mph average. If you think what cadence you can manage at that speed it's not so difficult.
Watch them on the angliru or zoncolan and the cadence is much lower.
Interesting look at relative power outputs Nibali v Froome. Show it might have been a close battle had Bertie and Froome still been around -

Looks straight forward, only 2 climbs today. The first one looks to climb very gradually so looks to be a big ring job. Well under a 100 miles for the whole thing as well. Poor stuff from the Tour organisers, should have given them a challenge!!:lolol:
Great stage, I really like getting to see the early moves try and get established then see it all the way through.
Majka does come across as a bit of a dick, especially after all his, "boo hoo, I can't believe they're making me ride the tour. It's so unfair"!
They can try but unfortunately he's much faster than all of them going uphill and downhill!
I think Rogers is looking a good bet - could recreate his first stage win at the Giro.
Bit harsh. Van garderen crashed from about 5th in the bunch and that was on a dry day. Unfortunately Froome is not a confident bike handler and there is only so much the rest of the team can do.
Next year won't have the same kind of start and no Cobbles. Froome will be back then and shooting...
Turned on the ITV4 streaming for a change. Can't cope with Phil any more - how long does he have to keep going on about Giant working for Kittel when its bloody obvious they're working for Degenkolb!
You beat me to it, SB. Its interesting that it is his left shoe that was in such a bad state - his right leg was the one that was cut up badly. I wonder if its his left tibia that is fractured. Certainly the force required to do that amount of damage to a cleat could break bones.
Yes, there are a whole host of possible injuries.
The very mechanism of Contador's injury means it isn't a stress fracture (from repeated use). Most likely a fracture at the top end (tibial plateau) which can result from excessive twisting forces as well as impact. Some of these require...
Broken tibia! Nails!
Can't believe it's the first time he's climbed off in 8 years.
Some talk of him taking a few too many risks though.
On a more concerning note, estimates put nibali at 6.2-6.5w/kg for the final climb!
