[Football] Banter - just an excuse for otherwise socially unacceptable behaviour

Absolutely. Good post and definitions that most folk would surely subscribe to. Sadly, however, a small minority is determined to see well-intentioned Banter 1 as Banter 2.

[Football] Banter - just an excuse for otherwise socially unacceptable behaviour

I hope that everyone did a proper assessment as to who might be offended every time a conversation took place . . .

[Football] Banter - just an excuse for otherwise socially unacceptable behaviour

This just says it all about sad folk of your ilk, who are so looking to be offended at anything that they miss totally what was being written. I did not doubt the legitimacy about anything - mcT indulged in banter, which he knows would have been regarded as such most of the time. Sadly, one of...

[Football] Banter - just an excuse for otherwise socially unacceptable behaviour

Christ -what must you be like to live/work with. Of course this can happen but to what extent do we go round considering every word/phrase we use and the effect this will have. Next time, I give up my seat if an old lady is standing on the bus, I am going to reflect on how I have insulted her...

[Football] Banter - just an excuse for otherwise socially unacceptable behaviour

See my latest post with regard to your obsession that someone needs to be blamed.

[Football] Banter - just an excuse for otherwise socially unacceptable behaviour

No one is blaming the complainant -why should anyone do that if that is how she felt. But to be fair to mcT some folk can react like that to innocent banter, which has no obvious evil intent whatsoever. Had she stayed, he would doubtless have changed his way of going about things, knowing the...

[Football] Banter - just an excuse for otherwise socially unacceptable behaviour

Of course they should, but your question in this case is irrelevant, as the person had no idea, prior to the resignation, that their approach was counter-productive.

[Football] Banter - just an excuse for otherwise socially unacceptable behaviour

Don't be so stupid - you can argue that PC has gone mad and also disapprove of giving offence -they are not mutually exclusive. There is such a thing as correctness and rightly so, as we should all avoid trying to give offence to others. But, as we both know, there are in all walks of life...

[Football] Banter - just an excuse for otherwise socially unacceptable behaviour

Of course you are right about different perceptions and doubtless power may have something to do with it. Yes, she may well have misinterpreted your jokes, but what I was trying to say was that you should not necessarily beat yourself up over it. Some folk can be unreasonably sensitive and take...

[Football] Banter - just an excuse for otherwise socially unacceptable behaviour

Fascinating post -thanks. Obviously it is hard to comment on what was exactly said and context, but might it be that she was being overly and unreasonably sensitive? Afterall you state that she rarely made a mistake and yet she said you were always picking on her -this doesn't quite add up.

Could you kindly settle for good old offended?

[Football] Banter - just an excuse for otherwise socially unacceptable behaviour

Fully agree with the statement about the FA, but they join a long list, such as the church NHS etc who do their utmost to protect their own. Unfortunate, but this is what happens in life, until these organisations are faced with the eventual unavoidable truth, in which case, lessons are learnt ...
