They did and of the estimated 2 million people that didn't have one, only 10,000 asked for one (as per the Guardian). I doubt a lot of these people have ever voted to be honest.

You need ID for almost everything these days. I needed it to register my mums death. I need it to attend some away football matches. I need it to start a new job. Some people need it to buy alcohol or tobacco. I need it to open a bank account. I need it to go to the tip for goodness sakes...
I've never understood why this hasn't been brought in before. So easy to commit fraud on a low scale by voting twice, voting on behalf of someone else etc.
You need some form of ID for so many things now from collecting a parcel to visiting the tip, I really don't see why you shouldn't be...
Good thing. People might take it more seriously for one reason. But also who doesn't have ID these days, can only be for criminal reasons? I'm struggling to think of any other legitimate reason.
