Can someone help me out with advice? Please.

I want to update mine via iTunes to save space but I have not connect to iTunes for a very long time, at least a year and the computer I used then is long gone so will it recognise the music I gone on it and save it or would I have to start again?

I'm still on iOS 6 so would the update go straight to 8 or will I have install 7 first?
