We've beaten them every time we've played them in the top flight. We took our usual 6 points (or was it 4 back then?) off them in 1981-82 and sent them down - thus sealing our own death warrant for 1982-83 - without our usual 6 points off Wolves we were doomed!
We're very good at ending teams'...
Well, if you want to risk settling for 34 points now .......................... I don't! That might be enough, but I wouldn't want to gamble our PL survival on it.
Besides, there's a club or two who are only 2 or 3 points ahead of us that I fancy trying to catch.
I wouldn't want to gamble on 34 points keeping us up. 5 more wins for me (although I'd be fairly confident that 4 would do).
But .............. we're not scrambling for 17th.place any more, are we. Looking up - who can we catch?
Seven points ahead of schedule, and after Liverpool visit the Amex in January our next seven home matches are:
Watford;
Burnley;
Huddersfield;
Cardiff;
Southampton;
Bournemouth and
Newcastle.
I'm not suggesting we'll get 21 points from that lot, but every one of those games is winnable - surely...
Interesting stat - wonder if it will persist until the end of the season? Teams that look dead and buried quite often have a surge at some point which rescues them - Palace last season, for example.
Good effort - but looks as if we'll be leaving it to the last moment - 3 wins and a draw out of 4 in March, 2 and a draw in April. Looks like a pretty hair-raising season - bottom three until the late putsch. Let's hope we're not too down-hearted by then (or have sacked CH in a moment of panic).
