Normally no, they wouldn't; of course not. But there may come a time when it isn't such a bad idea. As someone else has said on this thread, it's gambling £7M to get £170M. Assuming those figures are roughly correct, that's around 25 to 1 in my book. Worth a punt?

If Stephens leaves on a free next summer, won't his agent get a sizeable wedge of his signing on fee when he joins a new club? And presumably he'll be on a percentage of his wages anyway?
