If I'm ever unsure about getting a book I check out the one star reviews (out of five) for it on Amazon. One look at some of the numerous one star reviews on there was enough to put me off bothering with MD. I quote:

Possibly my all time favourite book. Have read it several times, have never had to 'check any references' and I'm thick as shit. If you were taking about War and Peace I could understand it, but C and P isn't particularly heavy going imho.
I disagree, I was fine with ACO, but no matter how many times I've picked up Trainspottng I've never got beyond a couple of pages due to the dialect, and it's my all time favourite film.
I skim read after The Smiths years, but it was still engaging enough. Makes you think of you've done nothing with your life, the boy just never stopped. The bit about his lifestyle transformation from caner to clean living long distance runner is interesting in the latter stages of the book.
Too many books too little time, which is why libraries are great, get out a selection of books, bin the ones that turn out to be crap, nothing lost financially.
