Had this conversation with PC Balkham tonight and it sounds like there will be a bit more dialogue between fans and police ahead of the cup match. It would be great if last week's debacle became the start of meaningful fan input for policing of future games.
I couldn't help myself. I reversed the video of the Palace fans breaking in and it looks EXACTLY like the Brighton fans leaving on the 85th minute.

To be fair, that video of Palace fans breaking into the ground is exactly the same carnage as when Brighton fans leave the ground on the 85th minute and no-one ever moans about that.
Can't help but think that the confession and statement that he's off for a week went down like a ton of bricks with his superiors and their PR chaps and he's been told to deal with it.
Dear PC Balkham
I'm writing a story about a fight in a playground between two 8 year olds. It's all a bit dull at the moment and need to spice it up a bit. I'm thinking of introducing a shark with a laser beam into the story. What do you reckon? Too much?

I really don't know what to make of the lie. A knife at a football match? Practically unheard of in this country, at least nowadays. It's just about the worst thing any policeman has accused football fans of having on them. You'd think that someone would have checked the veracity of the claim...
It's also made me start to think there might be an ulterior motive for the apparently light policing at the crucial moment the highest risk Palace fans being at the entrance to the ground. I quickly dismiss it as paranoia but then think that if they are prepared to make outrageous fibs about...
I don't think it's a question of what is worse but the fact that his statement said that there were knives and knuckledusters which paints a picture in the reader's mind that it was so bad that lives were at risk. Taken as a whole it's disingenuous, it includes things that were not true and...

I said it was well dodgy at the time. Their credibility completely in tatter now.
