There's a music thread right there. Great musicians that you've never quite got. Mine would include Led Zep, Red Snapper (the whole Acid-Jazz scene to be honest), Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Arctic Monkeys....
Aphex Twin is one of those artists that I've never quite got. I know he's clever and I know what he does is very influential but in that same way as I'd rather listen to the bands influenced by Bob Dylan rather than the man himself, it just leaves me cold. This 2014 album was for sure, a lot...
Yet more proof that Brighton music is in the very best of health across all genres. If in any way at all you like Kraftwerk and early 80s electro then get your ears around this EP from Brighton-based Jonteknik. Haven't got this off loop this morning yet...
A few albums I'm looking forward to for 2015:
Belle and Sebastian
The Waterboys
Oh yes, these two are big, big events in my household. Really hoping they live up to expectations.
Others include:
Father John Misty
Of Montreal
Laura Marling
Public Service Broadcasting
Bjork (allegedly)
Panda...
Caribou, for sure. The album has far too many weak tracks. Johnny Marr's solo album was bland andf not enough meat on the bone. As HKFC said, with a strong lead vocal he produces some wonderful music. Would love to see someone like David McAlmont have a go with him.
Two old names that had very...
Glitch Mob - thanks for the heads up there. That album had passed me by so going to get straight onto that. I'm a huge fan of edIT, his Crying Over Pros For No Reason album is a classic, especially the track 'Ants'.
Yep. He relocated there and got in with the chaps from Gus Gus (the band that launched Hafdis Huld, no less) and he's also collaborated with a young Icelandic singer called Ásgeir. The Gus Gus connection has been instrumental in giving him this new sound and much wider range of music to explore...
Here's a useful website for the latest end of year lists from various sites.
http://www.albumoftheyear.org/lists.php
And they even have an aggregate list with the ubiquitous WoD in number 1 slot.

I have 5 of the albums they've listed between 50 and 100, one of which; Adult Jazz is quite lovely, it reminds me of Aesgeir, the Icelandic chap who has collaborated with John Grant. The St Vincent album is pretty good too. I've got 9 of the albums from 1 to 49 and 3 of their top 10 (Swans, East...
I loved the Czars but they were a bit of an acquired taste veering towards Americana and as you say, nothing like his solo stuff. 'Bright Black Eyes' and 'Paint the Moon' are, for me, the two standout tracks by the band.
I love that track and the way it flows from the 'Art School' so well. She's quite endearing. There are a couple of similarities with Daniel Johnston - I don't mean the severe psychosis, the adoration from Sonic Youth and Nirvana nor with the obsession with Casper the Friendly Ghost but both...
Nope! I definitely hear Bryan Adams and Deacon Blue.
Maybe I have a Bryan Adams fixation. There's a few tracks on that new Ryan Adams album that sound, to me, like Bryan...and Bryan and Ryan share the same birthday. Coincidence? I think not.
I listened to that Frankie Cosmos album the other...
I agree with HT. Green is the best REM album imo. Love that album.
I'm a bit peed off this morning. Listening to the War On Drugs album this morning and the realisation that's sounds like a weird Bryan Adams/Deacon Blue mash-up.
I need to listen to Frankie Cosmos. I'm intrigued.
Two more 'Best Of' lists for you
First is Mojo Magazine who have:
1. Beck - 'Morning Phase'
2. War On Drugs - 'Lost In The Dream'
3. Sleaford Mods - 'Divide and Exit'
The rest of their top 50 is here...
Glad you said that. I found both Sinead O'Connor and Claudia Brucken's solo albums very MOR but I'm warming to both of them esp. Sinead's. There's a fair few songs that I'd love to know the story behind them.
