That's just it, though. The vast majority of the country are not socialist and will not vote for a truly socialist party at a General Election.

Exactly this. The old school 'left wing' working classes don't really exist. The majority of the country has now shifted much more towards the centre ground, yet Labour is moving in the other direction. A centre-ist Labour party would have a real shot at winning a General Election.

I'd argue that happened A LONG time ago. The problem with Corbyn is that he offers a vision of politics which is fundementally out of date.

Elected by a tiny proportion of the overall electorate. If there was a General Election tomorrow, the Tories would absolutely walk it.
