Third Test England v South Africa, The Oval, July 27-31

I did say it is very rare, so he is the exception to the rule at the moment and in fairness to him he has done well but his partners havent been able to stick around too long to help him.

He talks a lot of sense about batting and the approach to it especially about movement of the feet.

Have England ever used or considered using Geoff Boycott as a batting coach?

IMHO Root opted for safety first tactics to ensure they didnt win as despite the showing in the 2nd Innings they have some very talented and capable batsmen.

The consolation is that it is very rare that a batsman who has a good day as Elgar has comes out and does the same the next day. I expect him to go without scoring another 20 runs so a couple of wickets before lunch sets us up well as we get into their tail.

Bavuma looked ok in the 1st innings and the dropping of Elgar looks like it could be costly

Is this partnership SA main and last hope of saving the game.

The few extra runs up until tea may prove vital but hopefully not. Perhaps time to throw the bat and see what happens. Let Bairstow get his 50 or lose his wicket before declaring a few minutes wont make a great difference.

My fault Stokes went but no worries now a mad rush for 450 lead from the tail.

Third Test England v South Africa, The Oval, July 27-31

I think that Root will want a 450 target so possibly declare when the next wicket goes or soon after.

A quick 50 partnership from these 2 would do us well.

As you say I should have said by mid afternoon you are correct I have got confused but would still look at another 200 runs and then declare if needed and hope i leaves time to bowl them out. You and Dazzer win.

I was taking into account another hour or so this evening and ignoring the fact that today had been rained off and closed.
