Good post, all points spot on.
I do feel that defensively Cucurella was poor, but the formation/personnel left him all at sea. Veltman faced the same issues, but used his game intelligence and wealth of experience to make life difficult for the one or two trying to tear him inside out.
That it is true.
It stemmed the tide, Saints big push for a winner seemed to run out of steam, I got the impression they settled for an away point.
I wouldn’t say Solly was effective creatively in the slightest, that was Gross, but at least we stopped getting whipped down the flanks.
Can I just say that the Liverpool system’s uniquely fluid. You’ll see Mane and Salah 20 yards from their own goal after chasing back an opposition runner. Pace everywhere, sustainable for 90 minutes. Combinations of Fabinho and one/two others get support when not in possession.
[Not saying...
My opinion is that the set up left Cucurella vulnerable throughout. We turned to each other on 5 or 10 minutes and said "Shit, they tearing us apart" as the ball pinged round our empty box, Veltman/Cucurella being overloaded time and time again.
Out of our 34 games, how often has the Maupay...
We should've played the same formation and personnel as at Arsenal and Spurs, albeit replacing Bissouma (and Lamptey for one of those).
The zero or one striker set up worked brilliantly, why change a winning formula?
EPL games are invariably won in the midfield battle. We swamped Arsenal and...
I was there today, Southampton ran much of the game, we kept passing it to them, we couldn’t live with their midfield.
Only Gross coming on changed it for the better.
It’s alright for you from the sofa, where every home and away game is the same. Three home wins since August pisses people...
In an supposedly even matched contest, at least match up in midfield.
Stains didn’t leave midfield duties to Romeu and W-P, they were swarming all over us. That can only be because the ‘front 6’ worked in tandem to overwhelm Mwepu, Mac Allister and Caicedo.
Watching in the stadium so you get to see work and running off the ball, they gave us a lesson in passing football and winning every 40:60.
A horrible watch, as the ball pinged about our 18 yard box.
Thankfully Long and Adams are very average.
EPL games are controlled in midfield. The 4-4-2...
Sanchez 4
Veltman 7 - a fighter, used his nouse when Hassenhuttl overloaded him (which was a lot).
Dunk 4 - likes to pass to Stains players
Webster 4 - likes to pass to Stains players
Cucurella 2 - a defensive shocker, chaotic, leading to the first goal, shouldn’t play as a LB in a back 4.
Mwepu...
