The worst part for him is going to be the 180 hours unpaid work. At five hours per session that's 36 sessions of picking up litter or sorting clothes in a charity shop (and if he doesn't do it he'll be called back to court in breach). 36 sessions of hob-nobbing with junkies and shoplifters...
Technically it's a private prosecution but it's heard in the Magistrate's court and (IIRC) requires the same level of proof, ie beyond reasonable doubt.
There was a plan to stop these and, instead, pass details to the CPS.
