Its definitely in my all time top 5, I just love the dialogue and performances in it, aside from QT himself who is no great shakes - thankfully he gave himself a pretty minor role and left the acting to the big boys. Buscemi and Madsen absolutely shine.
Tarantino is always quite self-indulgent...
My problem with it was it just kind of meanders on and on, with not a great deal actually happening. Plot-wise its very flimsy, as you say. I'll give it another go though some day, when I see it knocking about on a movie channel.
I was underwhelmed as well, but I went into it only having a sketchy knowledge of the Manson family murders.
Having since read up on it and armed with that knowledge now, I'm going to give that movie another go some time. Tarantino films often stand up better after a second viewing, Reservoir...
Midway
Amidst the fairly predictable yee-haw American heroism, as a spectacle, this is actually an absolute thrill-ride. I was in the front row at The Dome, and found myself blown away by the sheer noise, speed and violence of the action sequences. You could've cut diamonds in my bumhole when...
Maybe this isn't for this thread, but I just watched Shawshank, and A Few Good Men, back to back.
Cinema really does not get much better than those. Ridiculously high bar.
Not seen Dark Fate yet, but I'm also thinking of going to see Joker again, might even do a double-bill and take in DF as well.
Was anyone else AMAZED that Joker was only a 15 certificate ? Some of the violence was pretty gruesome and graphic, one scene in particular.
Just to say, I love Worthing cinema. £5.20 off-peak, £6.70 peak times, nice little bar and you can take your beer into the auditorium. Whats not to like ? The rip-off multiplexes can DO one.
Saw Joker this afternoon without really knowing what to expect, but its comfortably my favourite film of the year so far. The performance from Phoenix is astonishing. He's on screen pretty much constantly the whole two hours, and I found him utterly mesmerising. A damaged individual with severe...
I'm hoping to get along to it this weekend, been very much looking forward to it as I've always been a huge Taratino fan. The running time is 161 minutes, so a pre-pub drinkies is probably unwise.
Incidentally, this will be his 9th movie, and he has stated that he will retire from directing...
Most of the way through the pod now, a pretty good listen. One thing one of them picked up on that I knew about was the subtle hint in the opening scene that Orange was the rat, because he's the one who readily dobs in Pink for not putting in for the tip.
There's also 2 more hints that I...
I also saw it at the cinema, and to be honest first time I saw it I wasn't blown away, in fact I was quite disappointed. It was massively hyped over here as this ultra-violent action gangster flick. So when you see it, and most of it takes place in a warehouse, and you actually see very little...
Yup. Vic in RD, Vincent in Pulp. There was apparently talk of a prequel movie (it even had a working title called 'Double V Vega') where the two brothers got together during Vince's time in Amsterdam, when he was running one of Marcellus Wallace's clubs there, and Vic goes over to visit. Man...
Saw Rocketman the other day, the Elton John musical/biopic. Much like Bohemian Rhapsody, it plays a little fast and loose with the facts and chronology of events, taking a bit of artistic licence, but its still hugely entertaining. Taron Egerton is excellent as Elton. Not the most talented in...
Watched Stan and Ollie last night.
The performances were spot on. Steve Coogan absolutely nails Stan Laurel's accent and little mannerisms, while John C Riley is almost as good as Oliver Hardy, under a slab of prosthetic chins. When you see them together particularly in some of the black and...
Mary Poppins Returns
This had a tough act to follow, as the original is one of my all-time favourites. Predictably it cannot surpass that, but it certainly captures the spirit of the original and if you can resist constantly drawing comparisons, its a lot of fun. The kids in it are great, and...
I thought it was *ok*
Enjoyed the performances, but I found the notion that Tony Lip went from disposing of glasses used by black men in his house, to within 2 months embracing Don as a treasured friend, a little fanciful. A lifetime of engrained racism can't end as neatly as that.
Its been a...
What Happened to Monday ?
Saw this last night via Chromecast. Quite an interesting concept set around 50 years in the future, when due to a global population crisis, new laws are brought in limiting people to having 1 child only, strictly forbidding all siblings. Any siblings born afterwards...
