That's all very interesting (ish) but I'm not sure how any of it actually contradicts my central point that the biggest single factor influencing the number of elite cricketers produced by an English First Class county is the number of competitive cricket clubs and cricketers (junior and senior)...
Kent win by 102 runs and are temporarily top of the table.
Warks have been bowled out and gone into tea leading Durham by 217 runs. That should be a draw.
3 way title and promotion battle.
Very, very close. :lolol: He can't be included as "Sussex born and bred" but along with a couple of others (notably John Snow) can be recognised as a product of Sussex. It should also be noted that Sheppard was a much better player than his 22 test caps suggest.
My agenda is, transparently...
There are lots of factors but they mainly trace back to the number of clubs and players in the catchment area. Models of sport development tend to, correctly in my view, follow pyramid type structures where the size of the base determines the viable heights achieved.
Where you have more clubs...
Yes, of course. I had Maurice Tate originally. He is the third member of the pantheon of Sussex born and bred England players with 10 caps or more - and the only one of the three to be born in Brighton or Hove.
Brilliant! Yes, your quote definitely stood out as his high point - I couldn't quite believe what I was hearing...
I have avoided finding out his name but he was SO irritating. Interestingly he also told anecdotes about his time playing 2nd XI cricket, presumably as a professional, which...
Mason Crane is currently the highest ranked young cricketer "born and bred" in Sussex. His move to Hampshire CCC aged 14 is obviously regrettable from a Sussex CCC perspective but these things happen occasionally. Not every young player can be optimally developed and Mason's coaching...
James Vince was at school in Wiltshire by the age of 10 so I'm not sure that even if he did make it as a fully fledged England test player anyone will claim a Sussex connection. His progression from a Minor County to a neighbouring First Class county rather supports my point about catchment areas.
As you know, I am a Sussex cricket fan, so think I know the answer, but that would be quite a tricky quiz question... :)
Which England legends are we talking about?
There is no mystery to the lack of England test players born and bred in Sussex.
Cricket in Sussex just does not operate in remotely the same way as it does in counties like Yorkshire, Lancashire, Nottinghamshire, Warwickshire, Middlesex, Surrey, etc
The likes of Somerset and Durham are...
3 down.
Love the way the commentators misrepresent what has happened to suit their own narrative and what they want to talk about. Cosgrove was another victim of a ball that didn't get up.
Only a matter of time until Sussex win - as it has been since Jason Gillespie and Ben Brown made their...

I'm going to be really pleased when I can stop listening to this Radio Leicester bloke telling me how well Leic have done in this game and what a mess of things Sussex have made...

The Radio Leicester commentator is an absolute tool. So funny being able to see the pictures of what he is commenting on and how wrong he gets so much.
The Sussex bloke is belatedly starting to call the pitch correctly as another back of a length ball threatens to hit Jofra on the...
