i recall the amusing advert. note the detail in there about £4.8bn subsidy in one year. sure there's a case for no profits for running the service, that doesn't mean there will be no annual increases or hide the fact rail is massively subsidised.
here's the question overlooked: if the UK trains are run by european companies, and the rail service those companies run in home nations are superior, how come they have so many problems running our services?
