The Mirror have a "new" story via their transfer blog :

Its thin stuff to say the least. Albion have been "stepping up" their bid to land McNair according to reports (see The Sun - who...
He is a promising player, young and ended last season well. And Albion need another CM. But he’s a track record of injuries and Sunderland need the ££ - so there’s both risk and caution in talking up the price. Which explains why clubs aren’t rushing. Plenty of other targets knocking around...
Wolves interest looks a bit premature. The Mail who originally reported Wolves interest (and Fulham are tracking him too) in their transfer live blog (and all the other sites have regurgitated including the Northern Echo and the BBC rumour round up), also said at weekend that Albion were...
He was injured but still played 16 times last season . More than enough to assess I’d have thought. . And Duffy and Stephens and Bong all played in basket case Champ sides before we bought them - is that really a blocker ?
Both could be true. The Sun , maybe, have got wind , as have other reports, that we will bid £5m + £2m worth of add ons when McNair back from NI duty (their story) , and Donald is right to say that’s about the price/bid I’m after but I haven’t heard anything yet. And others are interested. (His...
Paddy McNair looks closer.
Now “on the verge of signing” according to The Sun although it’s only that Alan Nixon . And a headline of “McNair we go “ - oh dear.

Agreed. And yes i agree with you. . Of course Duffy , the price we paid (good value even 2 years ago) , is an interesting parallel but doubt we'd get him for that this summer if we were still a Champ promotion hopeful.
And Goldson, however you look at it seems vfm at £3.5m although Albion...
Of course, although the inflation is more pronounced at the top end rather than at this level. . And it illustrates what a bargain Duffy actually was, even though at time he was our record signing.
Or Duffy was a ROI international who'd just shone at Euro 2016, ex Premier League, who had just had an outstanding season in the Champ for Blackburn when he signed for Brighton for er, about £3.5m and went on to win promotion and become in the space of 12 months a Premier League ever present...
Thanks. Yep. real gap in fevered reporting of bids from one side and fervent denials on the other (perhaps agent led stuff here)

Several reports (local Sunderland press, Express, Sky) that we have had 2 bids rejected for £2m and £3.5m.
Latest reports in last 24 hours are - a further, third, bid ("up to £5m" - said Sunday Express) expected...
Yes. But they mean an awful lot financially to both the player (pay rise) and to the buying club (more expensive to buy out).
Will Dunk get, for example, get his 4th or is it fifth new contract this summer (ie: a few more quid) to keep him happy and put off clubs sniffing about. ?
or the agent/player/Sunderland etc have talked. which might explain why its reported here
