Not quite - you’re summoned to jury service with an expectation/normality of 10 days but it could be any length of time. If it’s going to be materially longer than 10 days they’ll tell you beforehand, at which point you essentially have to plead your case for being excused on the same principles...

Yes, random from the electoral roll. Exclusions include : If you are currently on bail in criminal proceedings. If you have ever been sentenced to imprisonment for five years or more. If you have been imprisoned within the last 10 years. If you're currently hospitalised or attending treatment...

    [Misc] Jury Service

A few of us were having lunch after a fairly difficult morning…..in the restaurant across the road the defendant was also having lunch with his family who’d been at the trial from the start. He’d just finished being cross-examined by the (quite brilliant) CPS barrister (about a day and a half) -...

Seem to recall there is no second deferral - when you get your first one you have to provide dates you are available and they'll assign one of them

One of ours put her hand up and said 'I'm friends with his (defendant's) gran'

    [Misc] Jury Service

Yep - I was 'lucky' in that I got selected on day 1 for a case that lasted 7 days, then almost immediately picked again for one they expected to last no more than 3 days so my two weeks was fully occupied. Some of the original group I was called up with only did the second case and were hanging...

    [Misc] Jury Service

This - at the time of selection (will be loads in the 'waiting room') you have no idea what you're being selected for - don't think you find out until after the jury has been selected (initially 15 I thought in our cases - which I assume is normal - all 15 then went into court and the names of...

Ironically, foreign travel (business trip already booked) A 'booked holiday' is an allowable reason, so you may have booked March 7th off already

Yes - I did (didn't really need it in the end though as was pretty much fully occupied anyway). I deferred my initial call and gave some dates that I could do - they replied within days calling me on one of those dates.

When it’s busy I tend to use the car park down by the river behind the fire station (bottom of North St). Doesn’t seem to get as full as some of the others. Less than 10 min stroll up to the court.

    [Misc] Jury Service

When our first case had finished and we went back to the jury room after the (guilty) verdict, the little old lady who was clerk of the court came in……having obviously said nothing in 8 days relating to the case she walked through the door, stopped, and said ‘well you got that right, guilty as...

    [Misc] Jury Service

Sure the selection method means most juries are such a mix, the two I was on were the same (one 8 days which was fairly traumatic , one a day and a half which was cut and dried as soon as we saw CCTV evidence) In the first case the first 2 days were spent trying to convince one woman juror that...

    [Misc] Jury Service

Hmmm....depends on the case I guess, I certainly felt the weight of it. You can end up having to moderate some quite feisty arguments and entrenched positions in the jury room, you need to try to bring order the thinking/approach to some extent, be on top of everything that was said/presented in...
