Those numbers would also work, and I think there is a strong case for it. What worries me is retaining Ballance as his technique is flawed at this level. Maybe play Bairstow as a batsman only and play Buttler as wicket keeper?

2nd Test: England v South Africa at Nottingham, Jul 14-18, 2017

I would say 1. Alistair Cook - stick with 2. Keaton Jennings - needs a score - stick 3. Mark Stoneman - opens for Surrey - averaging 67 this season. Playing at no 3 for England is the equivalent of opening. So play him here 4. Joe Root - stay where he is 5. Jonny Bairstow - needs to knuckle...

What did Vaughan say? Edit: Don't worry, found it online. So, to add: If Root feels the players DO respect Test Cricket, then it's either mental or technical. Which is worse.

Yep. The Aussie quicks will find him out pretty quickly with that backward trigger movement.

Nope. We've not lost a wicket for approx. 40 minutes..

Cook. 15 off 34 and it took 22 balls to get off the mark. The lads on fire!

I understand Cook's record, but I don't think he's the player he was back then.. I'd love him to bring out a daddy century today and we can build an innings round him. Our recent test performances have included a number of early innings collapses, with 20-40 for 3 more the norm than the...

2nd Test: England v South Africa at Nottingham, Jul 14-18, 2017

I'd hazard a guess we'll be 27-3 early on, stage a dogged fight for a while, probably involving Root &/or Bairstow and get to 120-3 before another clatter of wickets, leading to 260 all out

2nd Test: England v South Africa at Nottingham, Jul 14-18, 2017

I think 'strong' is an understatement. SA are fully in control. I can't see Cook surviving long, straight balls appear to be impossible for him to play, and he's at huge risk of lbw (he get's his front leg too rigid and then plays round it) and also is dodgy outside off stump. Now, if...

2nd Test: England v South Africa at Nottingham, Jul 14-18, 2017

Too much of a one day mentality - nobody in the team, other than Cook who is willing to graft an innings.

Do we need 2 spinners for home test series?

Stokes is struggling to get into a rhythm and Amla looks in the groove. And rain arrives.

Amla settling in now and less movement. Need a wicket.

Great catch by Liam Dawson. Elgar out b Anderson.

Yep. We need a wicket or 2 whilst the conditions are favourable.
